Valve Steam Machine Pre-Orders Begin With $1,049 Price Tag and New Reservation System

Valve has started accepting pre-orders for its new Steam Machine lineup, bringing the company’s latest gaming hardware back into focus. The new Machine arrives in four different configurations, offering buyers a choice between 512GB and 2TB storage options, with each version available either with or without a Steam Controller bundle.

The entry-level Steam Machine model with 512GB of storage and no controller is priced at $1,049. The same configuration bundled with a Steam Controller increases the price to $1,128. For users looking for more storage, the 2TB version starts at $1,349, while the 2TB model with a Steam Controller costs $1,428.

Valve is also including additional accessories with the higher-storage versions. Customers who purchase either of the 2TB Steam Machine models will receive two extra faceplates featuring red fabric and solid walnut finishes.

The pricing has attracted attention due to the current hardware market situation. Rising costs around memory and storage components have affected many technology products, and the Steam Machine enters the market at a higher price than some gamers expected.

To handle demand, Valve is not using a normal first-come, first-served pre-order system. Instead, the company has created a controlled reservation process that places buyers into a queue. This approach is designed to prevent large numbers of users and resellers from quickly claiming available stock.

Valve will close the initial reservation sign-up period on Thursday, June 25, at 10 AM Pacific Time. After the deadline, users will not be selected based on who registered first. Instead, Valve will randomize the queue to give all eligible customers a similar chance.

The company is also adding measures to reduce duplicate reservations. Valve says it will check account details and purchase information to prevent users from increasing their chances by registering through multiple accounts or payment methods.

If a selected buyer does not complete the order within the 72-hour window, their reservation will be passed to another person in the queue. Users who miss the first reservation round can still join the waitlist and may receive an invitation later if additional stock becomes available.

The reservation process includes several requirements:

  • Steam accounts must be in good standing to participate.
  • Users must have completed at least one Steam purchase before April 27, 2026.
  • Reservation lists are separated by Steam Machine model and region.
  • Queue positions will be randomized after the sign-up period ends.
  • Selected buyers will receive 72 hours to complete their purchase.

The reservation system also allows users to sign up for up to four different Steam Machine models. However, if a user qualifies for more than one version, Valve will prioritize the highest-end model they selected and remove the other reservations.

With the launch approaching, the Steam Machine pre-order system will be closely watched by PC gamers. Valve’s approach could determine whether future hardware launches can avoid the availability issues and reseller problems often seen with popular gaming products.
