Microsoft has officially pushed back the release of Fable, with the long-awaited RPG now planned for February 2027 instead of its previously announced autumn 2026 launch window. The news was confirmed by Xbox through its official X account, where the company explained that the decision was made as part of a broader effort to manage its release plans during a busy holiday season.
Although Xbox did not directly state that Grand Theft Auto VI influenced the move, the announcement arrives at a time when reports have pointed to growing concern across the games industry about launching near Rockstar’s upcoming title. Several developers and publishers are reportedly reconsidering release dates to avoid competing with one of the biggest game launches in recent years.
Xbox shared the following statement regarding the delay:
“This year is packed with incredible games for XBOX players to enjoy, from Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 to Control Resonant, Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Grand Theft Auto VI. In order to plan our game launches through the holidays, in a way that works best for players, we’re moving Fable to February 2027 so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves. We’re excited to be giving players a major new look at Fable, as well as our broader lineup, at XBOX Games Showcase on June 7.”
The wording of the statement suggests that scheduling concerns played a role in the decision. Xbox’s release calendar for late 2026 already includes several major projects, including Gears of War: E-Day, which is currently expected to arrive in September 2026. Releasing Fable during the same period may have created internal competition between two high-profile Xbox titles.
The possible impact of Grand Theft Auto VI cannot be ignored either. Publishers often avoid launching games too close to large releases that can dominate player attention, online discussion, and consumer spending. With many players balancing limited gaming budgets and time commitments, a crowded release window can affect sales performance and long-term engagement.

This is not the first time Fable has faced a delay. Developed by Playground Games, the reboot has remained one of Xbox’s most anticipated projects since its original reveal. Microsoft has taken a measured approach to the game’s development cycle, allowing additional time before launch.
Despite the delay, fans will not have to wait long for another look at the game. Xbox has confirmed that Fable will appear during the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, where the company plans to reveal more details about the RPG alongside updates on its broader lineup.
Moving Fable into early 2027 may give Xbox more room to position the game away from an increasingly crowded holiday season, while allowing the title to receive greater attention ahead of launch.
