Xbox Helix Next-Gen Consoles Rumored at $1,200, “Like a $2–3,000 Gaming PC” With Massive AMD APU

New details continue to emerge around Microsoft’s Project Helix, a rumored next-generation console that may blur the line between traditional systems and gaming PCs. Earlier reports suggested that Microsoft could move away from heavily customized silicon, and recent claims now point to a performance-focused design built around an off-the-shelf APU from AMD.

According to information shared by Moore’s Law Is Dead on the Broken Silicon podcast:

Xbox Helix could feature one of the largest APUs ever integrated into a console. The chip is rumored to use AMD’s RDNA 5 architecture, placing it closer to upper mid-range or high-end desktop GPUs rather than typical console hardware. This approach suggests Microsoft may be targeting a different segment of the market compared to previous Xbox generations.

The reported specifications include a chiplet-based design with up to 68 Compute Units and 48GB of GDDR7 memory. If accurate, this would give Helix a clear advantage in raw graphical power over Sony’s PlayStation 6, which is said to feature between 52 and 54 RDNA 5 Compute Units on a monolithic chip. While both systems would represent a major step forward, Microsoft’s design could prioritize higher peak performance, potentially at the cost of pricing and efficiency.

Pricing is a major part of the discussion. Xbox Helix is rumored to land around $1,000, with some estimates pushing it closer to $1,200. At that level, the system would sit well above typical console pricing, but closer to entry-level gaming PCs. The comparison being made in leaks is that such hardware could rival systems in the $2,000 to $3,000 range, depending on configuration and market conditions.

On the other side, Sony’s PlayStation 6 is expected to focus on a balanced approach. Alongside strong performance, the system is rumored to support backward compatibility with PlayStation 4 titles, potentially enhanced by image reconstruction technologies like PSSR. Reports also suggest that a handheld PlayStation device is in development, with early optimization work already underway.

Both platforms are currently expected to launch between late 2027 and early 2028. While these details remain unconfirmed, they indicate that Microsoft and Sony could be preparing very different strategies for the next console generation.
