Hollow Knight: Silksong, the long-awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed indie title Hollow Knight, is finally confirmed for release this year. Developer Team Cherry has announced that the game will launch in 2025, putting to rest years of speculation and growing impatience among fans.
First revealed in 2019, Silksong has been in development for over six years. Since then, the studio has shared only limited updates, leading to widespread uncertainty about the project’s timeline. That uncertainty has gradually narrowed in recent months, with new signs pointing toward a firm release window.
During the Xbox Games Showcase 2025, Microsoft revealed the ROG Xbox Ally, a handheld gaming device similar to the Steam Deck. What stood out was the heavy presence of Hollow Knight: Silksong in the promotional material. Xbox president Sarah Bond stated during the presentation that Silksong would be “available at launch, and in Game Pass, when the Ally releases later this year.” This led many fans to believe that the game’s launch date would be directly tied to the new device.
However, Team Cherry has since clarified that the game’s release is not connected to any specific hardware launch. Matthew Griffon, who handles marketing and communication for the studio, addressed the confusion on Team Cherry’s official Discord server. His message, later reported by Eurogamer, confirmed that while the game will indeed launch in 2025, its release is independent of any console or platform launch schedule.
“I confirmed before the holiday,” Griffon wrote. “We are not tied to a console release.”

The mention of “before holiday” suggests a release date sometime before the end-of-year holiday season, likely in Q4. While this doesn’t provide an exact date, it marks one of the most definitive timeframes given since the game’s announcement.
Adding to the anticipation, a playable version of Silksong will be available at an exhibition in an Australian museum this September. This public demo will be the first time the game is available outside of private showings and may offer additional insight into its development status.

Despite the lack of a specific launch date, Team Cherry’s update signals that the project is nearing completion. With Gamescom 2025 scheduled for late August, it’s possible that the studio will provide a final release date at the event or shortly thereafter.
Silksong follows Hornet, a character introduced in the original Hollow Knight, as she explores a new kingdom. The game promises new mechanics, enemies, and environments, building on the foundation that made the original a standout in the Metroidvania genre.
For now, fans can look forward to more updates in the coming months, and after years of delays, it seems Hollow Knight: Silksong will finally see the light of day before the year is out.
