ASUS and Xbox Announce ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X Handheld Gaming Devices

ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) has introduced a new generation of handheld gaming devices developed in collaboration with Xbox. The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are built to offer improved comfort, better performance, and a more integrated software experience for players who want console-style gaming in a portable form. Both devices are scheduled to launch during the 2025 holiday season in select markets.

The design of the new ROG Xbox Ally series has been completely overhauled based on feedback from earlier models. ASUS has focused on making the devices easier to hold for long gaming sessions. The grip has been reshaped, and new texture patterns have been added to improve stability during use. The updated design draws inspiration from the Xbox controller, aiming to create a more natural feel in the hands.

The ROG Xbox Ally X includes impulse triggers, a feature carried over from Xbox controllers, which provides more precise feedback in games that support it. This addition is aimed at making gameplay more responsive and engaging.

Both models run on Windows 11, but with a custom software layer that brings the Xbox interface to the forefront. When the device is powered on, users are taken straight into a full-screen Xbox dashboard. This interface has been tailored for handheld use, making it easier to navigate with buttons and joysticks. Players can access settings and system functions quickly through the Xbox Game Bar, and despite the Xbox-focused software, the full Windows environment is still available for installing and running games from other platforms.

The standard ROG Xbox Ally is powered by AMD’s new Ryzen Z2 A processor, designed to balance performance and power efficiency. The ROG Xbox Ally X uses the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, which offers higher performance for more demanding games. Both devices support AMD’s latest technologies, including FidelityFX Super Resolution, Radeon Super Resolution, and Fluid Motion Frames, which are intended to boost graphics and frame rates.

Battery life has also been addressed. The ROG Xbox Ally includes a 60Wh battery, which is larger than previous models. The Ally X is expected to feature further improvements in battery capacity and thermal management, although detailed figures have not been provided yet.

The ROG Xbox Ally X also includes a dedicated processing unit for handling advanced tasks in the future. While not in wide use yet, this hardware may allow the device to support upcoming features as software evolves.

At launch, the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X will be available in countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, Japan, Australia, and several others. ASUS plans to expand availability to additional markets following the initial release.

With these devices, ASUS and Xbox are offering a handheld platform that blends the familiarity of console gaming with the flexibility of a Windows PC, aimed at players looking for a portable yet full-featured gaming experience.
