A new rumor suggests Rockstar Games is working to bring a 60 FPS performance mode to Grand Theft Auto VI on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. If accurate, this would be the first time a brand-new Rockstar open-world title launches with an optional high frame rate mode on current-generation consoles.
The information comes from the Polish gaming podcast Rock and Borys, where journalist Borys Nieśpielak claimed he received details from a source close to Rockstar Games. While he described the source as highly credible, he also noted that the information comes from a single individual and should be treated as a rumor until Rockstar makes an official announcement.
According to the report, Rockstar is currently developing two graphics modes for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Players may be able to choose between a 30 FPS quality mode and a 60 FPS performance mode. However, the developer has reportedly not finalized the feature, meaning there is still a possibility that the 60 FPS option could arrive after launch through a future update if additional optimization is required.
The same report states that the Xbox Series S is currently targeting 30 FPS. Borys also claimed Microsoft is assisting Rockstar with optimization work, although there is no confirmation that the entry-level console will receive additional graphics modes.
According to the latest rumor:
- PlayStation 5 could offer both 30 FPS and 60 FPS graphics modes.
- Xbox Series X is also expected to receive the same options.
- Xbox Series S is currently targeting 30 FPS.
- Rockstar has not officially confirmed the available graphics modes.
- The 60 FPS mode may launch later if it is not ready on day one.
A 60 FPS mode would be welcome news for console players. Previous Rockstar releases, including Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, were designed around 30 FPS on console hardware, with performance occasionally dropping during demanding scenes. A higher frame rate would provide smoother gameplay and faster controller response, especially during driving, combat, and online sessions.

The report also raises expectations for the PlayStation 5 Pro version. Rockstar’s recently released screenshots showcased advanced ray-traced reflections and high-quality lighting effects. On the standard PS5 and Xbox Series X, some of those visual features could be reduced in the performance mode to maintain 60 FPS. The PS5 Pro, with its additional graphics power, may be able to deliver both improved visual quality and higher frame rates.
Although Nieśpielak has previously shared accurate information before official announcements, including details related to CD Projekt RED’s collaboration with Fool’s Theory, this report remains unconfirmed. Rockstar Games has yet to reveal the graphics modes that will be available when Grand Theft Auto VI launches, so players should wait for an official announcement before treating the rumor as fact.
