8BitDo Celebrates Nintendo 64’s 30th Anniversary With Retro 87 N64 Edition Keyboard and Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller

8BitDo has announced two new Nintendo 64-inspired keyboards and a controller to mark the console’s 30th anniversary. The company is bringing the iconic look of the Nintendo 64 era to both desktop and gaming setups with the launch of the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard N64 Edition and the Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller N64 Edition.

The new Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard takes heavy inspiration from the original Nintendo 64 controller. Its design features a translucent blue color scheme that immediately recalls one of the most recognizable hardware styles from Nintendo’s late-1990s console generation. Several keycaps have also been customized to match the controller’s button layout and colors.

The keyboard includes yellow arrow keys inspired by the Nintendo 64’s C-buttons, while the A and B keys feature blue and green accents. The left Ctrl key uses a red finish, matching the controller’s Start button. Gray knobs and control buttons sit at the top of the keyboard, completing the retro-inspired appearance.

Despite its nostalgic design, the Retro 87 N64 Edition retains the modern features found in previous Retro 87 models. The keyboard includes an aluminum plate construction, a hot-swappable PCB, and Cloud Gray Linear switches developed in partnership with HUANO. Users can replace switches without soldering, allowing for easy customization.

Key features of the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard N64 Edition include:

  • Translucent blue Nintendo 64-inspired design
  • Yellow C-button-themed arrow keys
  • Blue and green A and B keycaps
  • Red Ctrl key modeled after the N64 Start button

Unlike the Apple AP50 Edition keyboard, which shipped with wireless Super Buttons, the N64 Edition includes matching wired Super Buttons finished in the same translucent blue color.

Joining the keyboard is the Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller N64 Edition, which adopts a similar color scheme. The controller features a translucent blue upper shell paired with colored ABXY buttons, while the lower shell and D-pad use a translucent white finish. Gray thumbsticks, blue rear buttons, and a matching gray charging dock complete the design.

Internally, the controller remains unchanged from the standard Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller. It continues to offer TMR thumbsticks, RGB lighting, a six-axis motion sensor, and a 1000Hz polling rate when used in wired or 2.4GHz wireless modes. The controller supports Windows, Android, SteamOS, and Apple devices.
