Respawn Cancels Two Games, Confirms Layoffs as Studio Refocuses on Key Franchises

Respawn Entertainment has officially cancelled two unannounced games that were in the early stages of development. The announcement was made this week as part of a broader restructuring effort at the studio, which is owned by Electronic Arts. While the studio did not reveal the names or details of the cancelled projects, earlier reports suggested that one of the games was related to the Titanfall series.

Alongside the cancellation, up to 100 employees will reportedly be laid off. Bloomberg reported that these job cuts are part of what Respawn referred to as “targeted team adjustments.” The studio did not provide details on which teams or roles are being affected, but the changes appear to be significant.

Rumors earlier this year pointed to a Titanfall-related project in development. This game was said to be an extraction-style shooter set in the same universe but separate from the mainline Titanfall series. Based on the timing and the lack of specifics from the company, it’s likely this is one of the games that has now been shelved.

Respawn stated that it will now shift focus to supporting its active titles, including Apex Legends and the Star Wars Jedi series. Both franchises continue to be important to the studio, with Apex Legends operating as a live service game and Star Wars Jedi delivering strong performance in both sales and reception.

The news comes during a difficult period for the gaming industry. Over the past year, many studios have experienced similar layoffs, often as part of cost-cutting measures and efforts to reorganize internal teams. Developers across the industry are being affected, regardless of company size or success.

This wave of job cuts has led to increased discussion around labor protections and worker rights in the games industry. Earlier this year, the United Videogame Workers Union was formed to support employees facing sudden layoffs and studio closures. While Respawn’s announcement does not mention these developments, it adds to a growing list of companies making major changes to their workforce.

For now, there is no official word on the future of the Titanfall series. While fans continue to hope for a direct sequel, Respawn has made no announcement about a Titanfall 3. With the studio now focusing its efforts on its existing titles, it remains uncertain whether Titanfall will return in the near future.
