Microsoft is bringing the Xbox Full Screen Experience (FSE) to a wider range of devices with the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview rollout. Previously introduced for third-party handheld systems, the feature is now accessible on regular desktop and laptop PCs running Insider Preview Build 26220.7271 (KB5070307) in the Dev and Beta channels.
With this update, Windows 11 users can open Xbox FSE by installing the Xbox app and enabling the mode through Game Bar settings. It can also be toggled using the Win + F11 shortcut. Once activated, the interface takes over the entire display, replacing the desktop with a simplified layout designed for game navigation. The mode reduces background activity and hides standard Windows elements to keep system resources focused on gaming tasks.
The layout uses a tile-based design that fills the screen and can be operated entirely with a game controller. According to Microsoft, the mode pauses routine maintenance processes and mutes notifications to help maintain consistent performance, whether the device is used at a desk or connected to a larger display. Users can return to the desktop at any time through Task View or the Game Bar if they need to manage other applications.
Inside Xbox FSE, players can browse Xbox, Game Pass, Xbox Play Anywhere titles, and other storefronts directly from the main menu. This approach brings access to multiple gaming platforms into one hub without requiring navigation through Windows menus.
Microsoft is releasing the update in phases, so availability may vary among Insider devices. Those who want early access can join the Xbox Insiders Program and enable the PC Gaming preview through the Xbox Insiders Hub. The company plans to expand the rollout to additional users as testing continues.
