Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch without microtransactions in its single-player experience, and that generative AI has also not been used to develop the game. The confirmation comes from Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson during a recent visit to the studio by Kinda Funny Games, giving players a clearer picture of what to expect when GTA 6 arrives later this year.
When asked whether players would be able to use real-world money to purchase items inside GTA 6, Nelson reportedly gave a direct answer: there will be no monetization in the game. He was also asked whether generative AI had been used during development and again responded negatively. The comments specifically concern the core GTA 6 experience and its single-player campaign.

The confirmation about generative AI also matches comments previously made by Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick. Zelnick said that generative AI has no role in what Rockstar is building with GTA 6, while explaining that Take-Two does use AI and machine-learning technology in other parts of its business. Rockstar has instead continued to emphasize its traditional approach to building the game’s world and characters.
This is particularly relevant as generative AI becomes more common across the game industry. Publishers and developers are increasingly exploring AI-assisted tools for production, including asset creation, coding, and other development tasks. Rockstar’s position with GTA 6 is different, with the company maintaining that the game’s world is being created through its own development process rather than generated using these tools.
The absence of microtransactions is also notable because GTA Online has become a major part of Rockstar’s business since its launch alongside Grand Theft Auto V. However, Rockstar’s latest comments should not be taken as confirmation that every future component of GTA 6 will avoid real-money purchases.

Rockstar has not yet explained how it plans to handle monetization for the next version of GTA Online. The studio’s comments are focused on the GTA 6 single-player experience, leaving questions about the eventual online component unanswered. That distinction is important because GTA Online has historically used Shark Cards and other forms of real-money spending.
For the main game, however, the situation is much clearer. Players buying GTA 6 will not have to deal with microtransactions during the single-player experience, and Rockstar says generative AI was not part of the game’s development. The studio is continuing to build the game around its own approach to open-world design, characters, and environmental detail.
GTA 6 is currently scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has also recently shown more of the game through an extended gameplay preview, while developers have discussed technical details surrounding the console version. The game is currently running at 30 FPS, with Rockstar yet to confirm a 60 FPS performance mode for launch.
For now, Rockstar is keeping the focus on the core GTA 6 experience. The latest confirmation gives players two clear answers ahead of launch: there will be no microtransactions in the single-player game, and generative AI was not used to create it. What happens with GTA Online and its monetization model will likely remain a separate question until Rockstar is ready to reveal more.
