Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss Now Available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S

NACON and Big Bad Wolf Studio have released Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, a narrative investigation game built around psychological horror themes. The title is now available across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The new project marks the studio’s largest production so far, shifting toward a darker tone while keeping a focus on story-driven gameplay.

The game takes place in 2053, in a world facing resource shortages and environmental instability. Large corporations have turned to deep-sea mining in search of rare materials, setting the stage for the central mystery. Players control Noah, an occult investigator assigned to examine an underwater station that has gone silent in the Pacific Ocean. As the investigation unfolds, Noah is guided by KEY, a personal AI system designed to support his mental stability. The relationship between the investigator and the AI plays a role as the story moves into more unsettling territory.

Exploration of R’lyeh forms a central element of the experience, presented as a vast, disorienting structure beneath the ocean. The city features shifting geometry and unconventional architecture that impact both navigation and perception. Encounters with creatures such as the Shoggoth add pressure during exploration, while the environment itself maintains a persistent sense of tension.

Gameplay focuses on collecting and analyzing clues. Players can inspect objects to reveal their composition, unlocking sonar frequencies that help locate related items or hidden paths. The sonar system also assists in navigating dark areas and uncovering details not visible. Energy management is tied to these systems. Each analysis consumes a limited resource, and running out increases Noah’s corruption level. This mechanic connects directly to how the story evolves, affecting both progression and outcomes.

The Vault system stores evidence and documents, allowing players to revisit clues and form deductions needed to move forward. Artifacts found during exploration can enhance tools, though some upgrades may carry risks depending on player choices. The soundtrack, composed by Nicolas Garcia and performed with contributions from Tina Guo, supports the game’s tone with a focus on slow-building tension.

Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss emphasizes decision-making, with multiple chapter outcomes tied to the player’s actions. These choices influence Noah’s corruption level and determine how the investigation concludes, giving the game a branching narrative structure suited for replay.
