Compal Adapt X” Modular Laptop with Modular Design and Two Display Sizes

Compal, a major Original Design Manufacturer (ODM), is preparing to introduce its modular laptop concept, “Adapt X.” The device has appeared in the 2025 IF Design Awards catalog, signaling potential progress toward a commercial release.

The Adapt X features a modular structure aimed at flexibility and customization. It comes in two display sizes—14-inch and 16-inch models—integrating with a HUB system that expands connectivity and supports additional modules. One of these modules appears to include a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to handle AI-related tasks separately from the CPU and GPU.

The design incorporates USB-based modular connections, allowing users to attach components like speakers, extra ports, and a detachable keyboard, which likely houses the core processing hardware. Compal’s modular system differs from Framework’s approach, which focuses on customizable individual ports, by offering interchangeable component blocks. This design aims to provide multiple configurations while keeping upgrade costs lower over time.

The Adapt X is part of a larger push by Compal into modular and adaptable computing solutions. Recently, the company showcased a Hybrid AIO desktop that transitions between desktop, laptop, and tablet modes. Another project, the “Infinite Laptop,” features an expandable display that extends from 14 inches to 18 inches through a horizontal sliding mechanism.

Compal traditionally designs and manufactures hardware for other brands rather than selling under its own name. If Adapt X reaches the market, it could provide an alternative for users interested in modular computing solutions, potentially competing with Framework’s offerings.

Compal has not yet disclosed official specifications, pricing, or release plans for Adapt X. However, its presence in the IF Design Awards catalog suggests active development. More details could emerge in the coming months, with Computex serving as a potential venue for unveiling working prototypes.

With interest in modular computing growing, Adapt X could attract users looking for more flexible and longer-lasting computing solutions. Whether it reaches mass production remains to be seen, but Compal’s involvement in this space adds another player to the growing modular laptop market.
