Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Gets Strong Steam Reviews

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is receiving a positive response from Steam players during its campaign early access period, putting it ahead of several recent entries in the franchise based on user ratings. Early access for players who pre-ordered the game began on October 16, and the shooter has accumulated more than 1,800 Steam user reviews, with approximately 90% marked positive at the time of writing.

Insider Gaming first highlighted the trend when the game had around 900 reviews and a SteamDB rating of 81.15%. Since then, the number of reviews has more than doubled, while the positive share has climbed. The game has reached Steam’s “Very Positive” category, although its current reception reflects feedback from a limited group of players who paid for early campaign access.

The early response compares favorably with recent Call of Duty releases. According to the supplied SteamDB figures, Black Ops 7 has a rating of 38.71%, Black Ops 6 sits at 45.75%, Modern Warfare III has 48.19%, and Modern Warfare II stands at 47.10%. Black Ops III remains a strong performer among the franchise’s modern entries, with a SteamDB rating of 84.36%.

“Modern Warfare 4 could become the best-received Call of Duty game on Steam since Black Ops III if its positive reception continues,” the current trend suggests. However, this is an assessment based on the supplied ratings, not a verified statement from the developers or a direct quotation from SteamDB.

The game’s current rating should be treated with caution. Players who pre-order to access the campaign early may be more invested in the franchise, and the wider audience could have a different opinion. SteamDB also adjusts its ratings based on review volume, pulling scores for games with fewer reviews closer to 50%. As more players submit feedback, Modern Warfare 4’s rating may change.

The full launch is scheduled for October 23, when multiplayer and DMZ will become available. PC players should also note that the game requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot to be enabled, adding hardware and firmware requirements to the launch checklist. The response to multiplayer will provide a clearer picture of whether Modern Warfare 4 can maintain its early momentum once the full player base joins the game.
