KeyBoy Advance Mechanical Keyboard With Retro Game Boy Advance Design and 50% HHKB Layout

PromoType (Galo) has officially launched the group buy for the KeyBoy Advance, a custom mechanical keyboard that takes its visual inspiration from the Nintendo Game Boy Advance. Designed around a compact 50% HHKB layout, the keyboard combines a retro appearance with modern customization features, including VIAL remapping, multiple PCB options, and optional wireless connectivity. The group buy is currently open and is scheduled to run until July 22, 2026, with shipments expected to begin in Q4 2026, although production timelines may change.

The keyboard is available as a barebones kit, meaning users will need to provide their own switches, keycaps, and stabilizers. Buyers can choose between anodized aluminium, e-coated aluminium, or translucent polycarbonate cases. The transparent PC version recreates the look of the translucent Game Boy Advance models that became popular during the handheld’s lifetime, while the aluminium versions offer a more traditional premium finish.

Rather than copying the handheld’s shape exactly, the KeyBoy Advance borrows several familiar design elements. These include a power indicator LED in the upper-right corner, a three-segment RGB light in the upper-left corner, decorative speaker grille styling, and a battery cover-inspired detail on the underside. The sculpted bottom case and compact proportions are also designed to capture the overall look and feel of Nintendo’s classic handheld.

The 50% HHKB layout keeps the main typing area and the full number row while reducing the keyboard’s overall size. Optional split spacebar layouts allow users to assign additional layer or modifier keys, making it easier to access secondary functions without increasing the keyboard’s footprint. Every key is fully programmable through VIAL, allowing users to customize layouts, macros, and shortcuts without relying on proprietary software.

Another unique feature is the pair of shoulder bumper buttons integrated into the case. Instead of serving only as decorative elements, these buttons use micro switches and are fully remappable through VIAL. They can be configured for functions such as layer switching, lighting controls, or wireless mode selection.

The KeyBoy Advance also offers several hardware options for different build preferences.

Key features include:

  • 50% HHKB layout with full number row
  • Barebones kit requiring separate switches, keycaps, and stabilizers
  • Anodized aluminium, e-coated aluminium, or translucent PC case options
  • Soldered MX-compatible PCB
  • Wired hot-swap PCB option
  • Tri-mode hot-swap PCB with USB, Bluetooth, and 2.4GHz wireless support
  • ANSI and ISO Enter compatibility
  • VIAL support for full key remapping
  • Programmable shoulder bumper buttons with micro switches
  • Top mount and O-ring top mount support
  • 1.6 mm FR4 plate included
  • Optional aluminium, carbon fiber, polycarbonate, and PP plates

Pricing starts at $275 through Unikeys for the soldered PCB with an anodized aluminium case. Upgrading to a wired hot-swap PCB adds $15, while the tri-mode hot-swap version costs an additional $40. Buyers selecting the e-coated aluminium case pay $20 more, while the translucent polycarbonate case adds $30. Depending on the selected configuration, the fully equipped tri-mode model with a PC case reaches $340. According to the group buy listing, current pricing reflects a 20% discount compared to the planned retail price, suggesting the keyboard may become available as a regular in-stock product after production concludes.
