GTA 6 Price Debate Heats Up as Analyst Suggests $80 Tag to “Lift” Game Industry

The discussion around Grand Theft Auto VI pricing is gaining traction as new analyst commentary points toward a possible shift in how AAA games are priced. While Rockstar Games has yet to announce an official price for its next major release, a recent note from Bank of America suggests the title could launch at $80.

The note, written by analyst Omar Dessouky after attending the iicon Video Game Conference, outlines why such a move could influence the wider market. According to the report, industry attendees believe publishers may find it difficult to justify higher prices if a major release like GTA 6 launches at the current $70 level.

“We also heard from attendees that the industry, which is perceived as struggling, would have difficulty selling games for $80 if GTA 6 came out at $70. We think it’s in Take-Two’s self-interest, as a publisher and partner to many developers, to raise the price point for the entire industry.”

The argument suggests that Take-Two Interactive is in a position to set a new pricing standard. As one of the most anticipated releases in recent years, GTA 6 could make it easier for other publishers to follow with similar pricing without facing major pushback from the market.

However, the idea has also raised concerns among players. Game development costs have increased over the years, but higher retail prices may not fully address the underlying issues. Large budgets, long development cycles, and production challenges continue to affect the industry, leading some to question whether consumers should absorb the impact through higher prices.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick offered a different perspective during the same conference. He stated that the company focuses on delivering value that exceeds the price paid by players, rather than simply increasing costs.

“Our job is to charge way, way, way less than the value delivered,” Zelnick said, pointing to a strategy built around perceived value rather than fixed pricing targets.

At this stage, no official pricing details have been confirmed for GTA 6. With its expected release window approaching, the final decision could have a wider effect on the market, especially at a time when players are already dealing with rising hardware and software costs.
