Keychron Launches the K8 QMK V2 with Enhanced Features and Design

December 11, 2024

Keychron has unveiled the second generation of its popular K8 QMK mechanical keyboard. The Keychron K8 QMK V2, a TKL (80%) keyboard, introduces a range of improvements over its predecessor, including enhanced internal materials for sound dampening, updated Bluetooth connectivity, and support for QMK firmware. With a starting price of $99, the new model targets mechanical keyboard enthusiasts seeking a customizable and versatile typing experience.

Enhanced Keycap Design

One of the most noticeable changes in the K8 QMK V2 is the switch from shine-through OEM profile ABS keycaps to shine-through double-shot Cherry profile PBT keycaps. This change may divide enthusiasts, as ABS keycaps are often praised for their sound characteristics, while the Cherry profile is favored for its ergonomic typing experience. The PBT material offers improved durability and resistance to shine over time, addressing a common concern with ABS keycaps.

Upgraded Connectivity and Firmware Support

The K8 QMK V2 now features Bluetooth 5.2, an upgrade from the original’s Bluetooth 5.1, and includes QMK firmware support. This enhancement allows users to customize their key mapping and macros more extensively, using platforms like VIA or Keychron’s proprietary Launcher software. The keyboard also supports wired connections via USB Type-C, with a 1,000 Hz polling rate over USB and 90 Hz over Bluetooth.

Improved Battery Life with Trade-offs

The K8 QMK V2 is equipped with the same 4,000 mAh battery as its predecessor but offers slightly reduced battery life. According to Keychron, the new model can last up to 190 hours on Bluetooth with the backlight off and up to 100 hours with the backlight at its lowest brightness. In comparison, the original K8 offered up to 240 hours without backlighting and up to 72 hours with RGB lighting. The addition of QMK firmware and upgraded Bluetooth connectivity likely accounts for this reduction.

Internally, the K8 QMK V2 includes additional foam layers for sound dampening, aimed at reducing typing noise and improving the overall acoustics. While this feature may not appeal to everyone, it provides users with greater flexibility to modify the keyboard’s sound profile according to their preferences.

  • Case Options: ABS or ABS with an aluminum frame
  • Polling Rate: 1,000 Hz (USB), 90 Hz (Bluetooth)
  • Battery Capacity: 4,000 mAh
  • Keycaps: Cherry profile double-shot PBT
  • Switch Options: Keychron Super Red, Brown, Banana (Gateron collaboration)
  • Backlighting: White or RGB
  • Microcontroller: ARM Cortex-M3 MCU with 256 KB flash memory

The new Keychron Super switches appear to be a collaboration with Gateron, sharing similarities with the Gateron Jupiter switches. The Super Red switches are 45 gf linear, the Super Brown switches are 55 gf tactile, and the Super Banana switches are 57 gf short-throw tactile with an early tactile bump.

The Keychron K8 QMK V2 is available in multiple configurations to cater to a variety of users:

  • White Backlight, Plastic Case, Non-Hot-Swap: $79
  • RGB Backlight, Plastic Case, Non-Hot-Swap: $89
  • RGB Backlight, Plastic Case, Hot-Swap: $99
  • RGB Backlight, Aluminum Frame, Hot-Swap: $109

The Keychron K8 QMK V2 builds upon the foundation of its predecessor, offering meaningful upgrades in connectivity, customization, and sound dampening. While some trade-offs, such as reduced battery life, may give potential buyers pause, the enhanced features and competitive pricing make the K8 QMK V2 a compelling choice for enthusiasts and general users alike. Available directly from Keychron, the keyboard continues the brand’s tradition of delivering quality and customization at accessible price points.
