Xiaomi XRING 02 May Feature Company’s First In-House 5G Modem

Xiaomi’s trademark filing for the XRING 02, spotted in June, hinted at the company’s plans for the next version of its custom processor. A new report now claims that Xiaomi is preparing to take another major step by developing its own 5G modem. This would mark a significant shift as the company looks to reduce its dependence on external suppliers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek.

The information comes from Weibo user Smart Pikachu, who reported that Xiaomi is working on a 5G baseband SoC that could be integrated into the XRING 02. The current XRING 01 pairs with MediaTek’s T800 5G modem, which is used as a standalone chip on the logic board. While functional, this design increases power consumption and takes up additional space, which is a concern in premium smartphones where internal space is limited.

By embedding its own 5G modem into the XRING 02, Xiaomi could save space and potentially improve power efficiency. This design would also allow room for a larger battery or other components. It could further lower costs over time, as reliance on external modem suppliers is reduced.

Developing a 5G modem, however, comes with technical challenges. Apple’s attempt to create its own modem faced delays and took years of effort before resulting in the C1 modem. Xiaomi may take a different approach by focusing on cost efficiency. Reports suggest the company has invested a fraction of what Apple spent on similar projects, which may help it manage development risks.

The XRING 02 is rumored to have applications beyond smartphones and tablets. It could also feature in Xiaomi’s electric vehicles, which would require compliance with automotive communication standards and regulations. These factors might delay the launch of the second-generation chip.

There is also speculation about the manufacturing process for the XRING 02. Some reports suggest Xiaomi could use TSMC’s 2nm process node if export restrictions from the United States ease in time. At present, the exact timeline for production and release remains unclear.

Xiaomi has not confirmed these details officially, and it is likely that more information will surface as development progresses.
