Santa Monica Studio has delayed God of War Laufey by approximately three months, moving the PlayStation 5 exclusive from its previously announced February 16 release date to May 20, 2027. The studio confirmed the change on X, explaining that the development team needs additional time to complete the remaining work and deliver the experience it has planned for players.
The announcement comes close to the game’s original launch window, especially since pre-orders opened in late September. Sony previously listed the Standard Edition for $69.99 and the Digital Deluxe Edition for $79.99. A Collector Box was also available for £129.99, with its original February 16, 2027, release date.
Santa Monica Studio shared the following statement regarding the delay:
“Since the reveal of God of War Laufey in June, we’ve been deeply grateful to see so much excitement for Faye’s journey through the Everywhen. We don’t take for granted the trust placed in our studio to make an extraordinary experience worthy of the passion and dedication of our fans. With that in mind, we’ve decided to delay God of War Laufey’s release to May 20th, 2027. We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential. On behalf of everyone on the team, we appreciate your patience and we’ll be back to share more updates soon!”
Unlike the previous mainline entries, God of War Laufey puts Faye, Kratos’s late wife, in the leading role. Reports about a potential Faye-focused God of War project first surfaced in April, before Sony officially revealed the game during its June State of Play presentation with an approximately 20-minute showcase. Santa Monica Studio later confirmed the February 16, 2027, release date at San Diego Comic-Con in July.
The latest delay means players will have to wait another three months to experience Faye’s journey through the Everywhen. However, this is not the first time the studio has postponed a major release. God of War Ragnarök was originally scheduled to arrive in 2021 before being delayed to 2022. The new delay is considerably shorter, but it still changes the plans of players who have already placed pre-orders.
God of War Laufey is now scheduled to launch on May 20, 2027, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
