Saber Interactive and Games Workshop drew attention across the gaming community when they announced Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 only months after the release of Space Marine 2. The sequel has been performing well with strong sales and steady engagement, making the timing of the announcement a point of discussion among fans. Many wondered whether the early reveal signaled a shift in development priorities or reduced support for the current title.
A recent episode of Warhammer TV’s Deep Strike, highlighted by IGN, offered clarity. The episode, available to Warhammer Plus subscribers, featured Creative Director Oliver Hollis-Leick discussing the team’s broader approach. He noted that the announcement of the third entry does not impact development or content plans for Space Marine 2. Instead, it reflects the studio’s long-term vision for the franchise and the practical realities of game production.

Hollis-Leick explained that major projects in the Space Marine series follow extended development cycles. Space Marine 2 required around four years to complete, and Space Marine 3 is expected to undergo a similar schedule. Because of this, announcing the next title early helps set expectations and assures players that the series will continue to expand. He emphasized that the team remains fully committed to supporting Space Marine 2 with new updates and content throughout its lifecycle.
Saber Interactive has already shared a detailed content roadmap for 2026, confirming a steady stream of additions for players. The planned updates include:
- Two new PvE missions
- Techmarine class
- Techmarine weapon (Omnissiah Axe)
- Battle-barge expansion
- New stratagems with additional battlefield conditions and rewards
- Progression update
- New Terminus enemy
- Two new PvP arenas
- PvP stratagems
- New siege map
This roadmap indicates that Space Marine 2 will continue receiving significant support even as work on the next installment moves forward.
During the interview, Hollis-Leick also addressed ongoing speculation about the Necron scene shown at the conclusion of Space Marine 2. He noted that the Warhammer 40,000 universe spans vast timelines and environments, where ancient structures and hidden relics are common. Discovering Necron technology beneath a planet’s surface aligns with the world’s established lore. While he did not confirm future Necron involvement, he acknowledged the link to Blackstone-like elements present in the game’s narrative.
Hollis-Leick added that the projected four-year development timeline places Space Marine 3 around a 2028 release window, assuming the project progresses without major delays. With continued updates planned for Space Marine 2 and development of the next entry underway, Saber Interactive aims to maintain momentum across both titles while building toward the franchise’s next chapter.
