Retroid Pocket Duo Gets Dual 120Hz OLED Displays and Qualcomm Q-7790 Processor

Retroid is turning its dual-screen handheld plans into a much more interesting proposition. The company has now revealed more of the upcoming Retroid Pocket Duo, confirming a Qualcomm Q-7790 processor and showing the handheld in a translucent purple finish. The new details follow the first look at the device and give gamers a better idea of what Retroid is preparing for its next Android gaming handheld.

The Pocket Duo takes a different approach from Retroid’s existing clamshell handhelds by putting two displays into a single system. Its design borrows heavily from the Pocket Flip 2, while the lower section follows the 4:3 display format associated with the Pocket Nova. Both panels are expected to use OLED technology and run at up to 120Hz, giving the device a combination suited to modern Android games as well as older systems that benefit from a 4:3 screen.

The processor is also an important part of the latest reveal. Retroid has confirmed that the Pocket Duo will use Qualcomm’s Q-7790, a chip from Qualcomm’s Dragonwing lineup rather than one of its familiar Snapdragon-branded mobile platforms. The Q-7790 is listed with eight Kryo CPU cores reaching up to 2.8GHz, an Adreno 722 GPU running at up to 1.15GHz, and a 24 TOPS NPU. It also brings newer wireless connectivity, including Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.

That hardware puts the Pocket Duo in an interesting position among Android gaming handhelds. The device is expected to compete with systems such as the AYN Thor, while Retroid’s existing Pocket Nova already uses Qualcomm hardware and a 4.5-inch 1280 x 960 120Hz AMOLED display. The Nova starts at $229, although the Pocket Duo’s pricing has not yet been announced.

Retroid’s latest images also show the Pocket Duo in translucent purple, giving a clearer look at the finished clamshell design. The company previously teased the handheld without revealing much about its lower section, but the newer material makes it clear that Retroid is positioning the Pocket Duo as a purpose-built dual-screen system rather than another handheld paired with an external display accessory.

The dual-screen approach could make the Pocket Duo particularly interesting for Nintendo DS and 3DS emulation, where having two physical displays is more useful than simply running both screens inside a single display. Retroid already sells a Dual Screen Add-on that turns compatible handhelds into dual-screen systems, but the Pocket Duo appears to integrate the two panels directly into the chassis.

Retroid has not yet announced the Pocket Duo’s final price, memory configurations, storage options, battery capacity, or release date. Those details will likely determine how competitive the device is when it eventually reaches the market. For now, the combination of two 120Hz OLED screens, a Qualcomm Q-7790 processor, and a compact clamshell design makes the Pocket Duo one of Retroid’s most unusual handheld projects yet.
