Pimax Announces the Dream Air: A Lightweight PCVR Headset With High-End Features

January 3, 2025

Pimax has unveiled the design and specifications of its upcoming VR headset, the Pimax Dream Air, during an online keynote presentation. Aimed at redefining the portable PCVR headset market, the Dream Air introduces a compact and lightweight form factor while incorporating advanced technologies such as 27 million-pixel resolution, integrated head, hand, and eye tracking, spatial audio, and a DisplayPort connection for uncompressed visuals. The headset also features a self-adjusting backstrap for enhanced comfort during extended use.

The Dream Air marks a significant departure from Pimax’s previous headset designs. Borrowing core technologies from the larger Crystal Super, including micro-OLED panels and pancake lenses, the Dream Air condenses these features into a smaller, more portable form factor. Pimax describes this as the beginning of a “small form factor era” for the company, catering to a wider range of use cases beyond seated VR simulations.

The Pimax Dream Air comes equipped with features designed to enhance both usability and performance, including:

  • Integrated Eye-Tracking and Auto-IPD Adjustment: Automatic adjustment of the interpupillary distance (IPD) ensures precise visuals for all users, making setup quick and interaction seamless.
  • Inside-Out Tracking: Powered by Pimax’s proprietary SLAM algorithm, the headset eliminates the need for external base stations while maintaining precise motion tracking.
  • Ringless Controllers with Hand Tracking: Designed for ease of use, the controllers support a wide variety of VR applications, while integrated hand tracking provides an additional layer of interactivity.
  • Spatial Audio Integration: Built-in audio delivers an immersive experience without requiring external headphones.
  • Lightweight Design: Weighing less than half a kilogram, the Dream Air prioritizes portability and comfort, making it ideal for extended play sessions.
  • DisplayPort via Type-C: A lightweight cable ensures uncompressed, high-quality visuals for demanding PCVR applications.
  • Modular Accessories: Compatibility with additional features, such as prescription lenses and an optional Lighthouse faceplate for external tracking, offers flexibility for future upgrades.

Pimax emphasizes the versatility of the Dream Air, positioning it as a complement to the Crystal Super. While the Crystal Super is optimized for simulation experiences like racing and flight games, the Dream Air focuses on active VR activities such as VRChat, room-scale experiences, and mobile entertainment. Its lightweight design and portability make it suitable for users who prioritize freedom of movement and convenience.

In addition to the Dream Air, Pimax is working on an optional standalone device called Cobb, powered by the Snapdragon XR2 chip. This add-on allows the Dream Air to operate independently for applications like streaming movies, playing light games, or running productivity tools. The Cobb expands the versatility of the headset, offering users the ability to switch between tethered PCVR and standalone use.

The Pimax Dream Air is priced at $1,895, and it includes ringless controllers. Early adopters can take advantage of a special pre-order price of $1,199. Pimax offers flexible payment options for the remaining balance:

  • A one-time payment of $696 (12% discount).
  • 24 monthly payments of $32.99 for Prime members.

Pimax plans to begin shipping the Dream Air in May 2025, with pre-orders now open for interested customers.

The Pimax Dream Air represents a significant step forward in VR hardware, blending high-resolution visuals and advanced tracking technologies into a portable, lightweight design. With its competitive pricing, modular flexibility, and ability to meet the diverse needs of VR enthusiasts, Dream Air is poised to make an impact on the growing virtual reality market.
