Carrying a mouse, presentation clicker, and remote control separately could soon be unnecessary for some users. MBox is funding the DS21 on Kickstarter, a modular wireless device that combines all three functions and lets users switch between a conventional ergonomic mouse and a handheld motion controller.
The DS21 is built from two parts that connect through a magnetic docking system. With the smaller controller attached, the complete unit weighs around 85 grams and is designed as an ergonomic mouse with full palm support. MBox is targeting users who want a mouse that can also handle presentations and remote control tasks without adding another accessory to their bag.
The 35-gram core can be pulled out of the mouse and used independently. Once detached, it uses a six-axis gyroscope to translate hand movements into onscreen controls. MBox says the controller can work from distances of up to 15 meters, giving users the option to move around a room while navigating presentations or controlling compatible devices.
The detached controller also includes a touch-sensitive surface for functions such as clicking and volume adjustment. Beyond presentations, MBox says the DS21 can be used with projectors, smart TVs and e-readers, while the remote control functions can also be used for taking photos on a smartphone.
Wireless connectivity comes through both a 2.4GHz USB receiver and Bluetooth 5.3. The 2.4GHz connection is intended to provide a low-latency link, while Bluetooth allows the device to connect without the receiver. MBox lists Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android compatibility, giving the DS21 a fairly broad range of potential uses.
The project has already passed its original Kickstarter funding target of $2,000 by a wide margin. Early backers can currently get the DS21 for $55, compared with an expected retail price of $79. Production is planned to begin in September, with shipping targeted for November.
Crowdfunding products can change before reaching customers, however, and MBox itself points to challenges involving the magnetic docking system and gyroscope performance across different platforms. The final hardware and software experience will ultimately determine whether the DS21 can deliver on its promise.

For users who frequently give presentations or switch between PCs and other devices, the DS21 offers an interesting approach. Rather than adding another remote to the desk or travel bag, MBox is trying to make the mouse itself the starting point for several different control methods.
