HDMI Forum Announces HDMI 2.2 Specification with Enhanced Features and Higher Bandwidth

January 6, 2025

The HDMI Forum, Inc. has officially announced the upcoming release of the HDMI 2.2 Specification, a significant update designed to meet the growing demands of the HDMI ecosystem. Scheduled for release in the first half of 2025, the new specification introduces advanced solutions for content creation, distribution, and playback, aiming to deliver an improved and seamless experience for end-users.

The HDMI 2.2 Specification offers a substantial increase in bandwidth, reaching up to 96 Gbps. This enhancement, coupled with the integration of next-generation HDMI Fixed Rate Link (FRL) technology, ensures optimal transmission of high-quality audio and video across a broad range of devices and applications. These advancements enable support for more demanding and data-intensive use cases, including immersive technologies like augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), spatial computing, and light field displays.

The expanded bandwidth also benefits commercial sectors, enabling high-resolution applications such as large-scale digital signage, medical imaging, and machine vision. The HDMI Forum emphasizes that the new specification ensures displays can fully support native video formats, offering reliable and consistent performance across various platforms.

HDMI 2.2 Cable

The HDMI 2.2 Specification introduces a new feature called Latency Indication Protocol (LIP). This technology addresses synchronization challenges between audio and video, particularly in multi-hop system configurations that include devices like audio-video receivers (AVRs) and soundbars. By improving audio-video sync, LIP enhances the viewing experience for both home entertainment and professional environments.

To complement the HDMI 2.2 Specification, the HDMI Forum has unveiled the Ultra96 HDMI Cable. This new cable supports the full 96 Gbps bandwidth, enabling the delivery of all HDMI 2.2 features. The cable will be part of the HDMI Cable Certification Program, which requires rigorous testing and certification of each model length to ensure compliance. Certified cables will feature a Certification Label, giving consumers confidence in their performance.

The HDMI 2.2 Specification aims to address the evolving needs of content creators, distributors, and end-users. It supports higher resolutions and refresh rates, catering to the requirements of TV, movie, and game studios. The specification is also designed to accommodate future advancements, ensuring that the HDMI ecosystem remains adaptable to new technologies and market demands.

“The HDMI Forum’s continuing mission is to develop specifications to meet the HDMI ecosystem’s growing demand for high-performance capabilities and features,” stated Chandlee Harrell, president of the HDMI Forum. “This new specification supports the fast-evolving landscape for amazing new technologies and products entering the markets now and in the future.”

The HDMI 2.2 Specification will be made available to all HDMI 2.x Adopters. The HDMI Forum plans to notify adopters of the official release in the first half of 2025. With its advanced features and forward-looking design, the new specification is poised to set a new standard for the HDMI ecosystem, enhancing the quality and reliability of audiovisual experiences across various applications.
