God of War: Sons of Sparta Launches on PS5; Santa Monica Studio Confirms God of War Trilogy Remake

Sony’s latest State of Play broadcast delivered major updates for fans of Kratos. God of War: Sons of Sparta is available now on PlayStation 5, and Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that a remake of the original Greek trilogy is in early development.

Sons of Sparta shifts the series into a 2.5D Metroidvania format while returning to Greek mythology. The story follows a young Kratos during his training at the Agoge alongside his brother Deimos, long before the events depicted in the Norse-era titles. The narrative was written by the same team behind God of War and God of War Ragnarök, maintaining continuity in tone and character development.

Development was handled by Mega Cat Studios, a studio experienced in side-scrolling action design. Combat focuses on Kratos’ sword-and-shield style, with layered melee encounters and mobility-based progression. Players can unlock “Gifts of Olympus,” abilities that expand both combat options and exploration routes. As expected from the Metroidvania structure, progression is tied to ability upgrades that open new paths across interconnected regions inspired by ancient Greece.

The launch trailer showcased large-scale boss encounters and environmental set pieces adapted to a side-scrolling perspective. While the presentation differs from the third-person format of recent entries, the emphasis on weighty combat and mythological themes remains intact.

Alongside the new release, Santa Monica Studio announced that it is remaking the original God of War trilogy. The studio noted that the project is still in early development, with no timeline provided.

The reveal featured TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos in the Greek saga. Carson also narrates Sons of Sparta. Although the studio did not formally confirm his role in the remake, his involvement in the announcement has led to speculation that he may return as Kratos.

The original trilogy helped define the action genre on PlayStation platforms, blending cinematic storytelling with large-scale combat and mythological settings. A full remake suggests updated visuals, modernized mechanics, and technical improvements designed for current hardware.

With Sons of Sparta launching immediately and the trilogy remake now confirmed, Sony is expanding the franchise in two directions: exploring Kratos’ past through new gameplay styles while revisiting the series’ origins for a modern audience. Further updates on the remake are expected as development progresses.
