A quieter mechanical keyboard does not have to mean giving up the travel and feel of a standard low-profile switch. Gateron is addressing that with its new Low Profile Silent 3.0 Black switch, a linear option designed to reduce typing noise while keeping the same core specifications as the company’s regular Low Profile 3.0 switches.
The new switch uses silicone O-rings on the stem components to cushion both the bottom-out and top-out movements. This helps reduce the noise produced during key presses, making the switches better suited to offices, shared workspaces, and other environments where loud keyboards can become distracting.

Unlike some silent switch designs, Gateron’s Low Profile Silent 3.0 Black does not sacrifice travel to achieve its quieter operation. It retains a 1.7 mm actuation distance and 3.4 mm total travel, matching the specifications of the standard Low Profile 3.0 platform. The Black version is also the heaviest model in Gateron’s Silent 3.0 lineup, with an operating force of 50 gf ±15 gf.
The switch combines a full POM stem with a nylon bottom housing and a clear polycarbonate top housing. Gateron also factory-lubricates the switches, which should help provide a smoother feel during repeated keystrokes. The transparent top housing allows keyboard lighting to remain visible, so users do not have to choose between silent operation and RGB illumination.
Gateron’s Low Profile 3.0 platform also takes a different approach to mounting compared with many other low-profile switch standards. It uses a five-pin layout and sockets similar to conventional Cherry MX-style switches. For keyboard manufacturers, this makes it possible to develop low-profile and full-height versions of a keyboard while changing the switch plate rather than adopting completely different switch mounting hardware.

Gateron says the Low Profile Silent 3.0 Black is designed for noise-sensitive users and professional environments. The combination of silicone dampening, a 50 gf operating force, and the full 3.4 mm travel gives the switch a quieter profile without changing the basic Low Profile 3.0 geometry.
The switches are now available directly from Gateron, with pricing starting at $14 for 35 switches and $44 for 110 switches. The launch also expands the Low Profile 3.0 ecosystem, which has already appeared in keyboards from manufacturers such as NuPhy and Chilkey.
