Sandfall Interactive, an independent game development studio based in France, has officially released its debut title, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The game is now available worldwide on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Xbox players can also access the title as part of their Game Pass subscription.
Published by Kepler Interactive, known for titles such as Tchia, Sifu, and Pacific Drive, Expedition 33 introduces players to a richly imagined fantasy setting inspired by Belle Époque-era France. The game blends reactive turn-based combat with an open-world exploration system and offers extensive character customization options. Players take on the role of Maelle and her companions as they journey across a world shaped by myth, mystery, and conflict.
The story unfolds with a cinematic presentation and a voice cast that features talent from both the video game industry and film. Notable actors include Charlie Cox, Jennifer English, Ben Starr, and Andy Serkis. The game is fully voice-acted in both English and French, aiming to deliver a narrative experience that feels grounded yet expansive.
Expedition 33 sets itself apart with a combat system that evolves based on player decisions during battles. Rather than relying purely on traditional turn-based mechanics, the system emphasizes timing and adaptability, encouraging strategic planning and experimentation with different character builds. Each region in the game presents new environments to explore, along with optional side quests and hidden areas that add depth to the experience.
To accompany the launch, the game’s complete original soundtrack has been released by Laced Records. Composed by Lorien Testard, the soundtrack includes 154 original tracks and spans over eight hours of music. Vocal contributions come from Alice Duport-Percier, Victor Borba, and Ben Starr, who also voice the in-game character Verso. The soundtrack is available on all major streaming platforms.
In addition to the standard release, a digital Deluxe Edition is available for purchase. This version includes the base game and exclusive in-game cosmetics such as the “Flowers” Collection, the “Clair” outfit for Maelle, and the “Obscur” outfit for Gustave.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is Sandfall Interactive’s first major release and marks the studio’s entry into the competitive landscape of narrative-driven RPGs. Early impressions suggest a strong start for the developer as they aim to establish themselves with this visually distinct and mechanically ambitious title.
