Gearbox Software and 2K Games have confirmed that Borderlands 4 has been delayed and will no longer release on the Nintendo Switch 2 on October 3, 2025, as originally planned. The announcement was made through an official statement on X, where the companies cited the need for more development and polish before bringing the game to Nintendo’s upcoming platform.
According to the announcement, the Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 is not cancelled. Instead, the release will be pushed back to an unspecified date, with the aim of aligning the launch with a future update that introduces cross-save functionality. However, no timeline has been provided for when players can expect either the new release window or the cross-save update.
Gearbox stated:
“We need to share that the release of Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 is being delayed. We do not take this decision lightly, but are committed to ensuring we deliver the best possible experience to our fans, and the game needs additional development and polish time to do that. Our hope is to also better align this release with the addition of cross saves, which we are working on and recognize is very important. We will update you all on the new release timing once we’ve fully adjusted our plans.”
In line with Nintendo’s digital policy, all pre-orders made through the Nintendo eShop will be automatically refunded starting September 26, though customers can also process refunds manually before that date. Players who purchased physical copies are advised to contact their retailers for further instructions.

The delay comes after performance concerns were raised when Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford shared early figures about how the game would run on the Switch 2. Additionally, Borderlands 4 has faced reports of performance drops, stuttering, and minor bugs on PC since launch, which may have influenced the decision to extend development time for the handheld console hybrid.
For now, the game remains available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms, while Switch 2 players will need to wait for an updated launch schedule.
