Bethesda Game Studios has officially confirmed several long-rumored Fallout projects while outlining its plans for the franchise following Microsoft’s latest layoffs, which are expected to affect around 25% of Bethesda’s workforce. Despite the restructuring, the studio says development on its biggest franchises continues, with multiple Fallout projects currently in active development.
The biggest announcement is the confirmation that remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are in development. Rumors about updated versions of both games have circulated for years, but this is the first time Bethesda has publicly acknowledged that the projects are real. Although the company stopped short of revealing release dates or gameplay details, it confirmed that work is ongoing.
Bethesda said:
“We also know many players want to revisit previous Fallout experiences. While we’re not announcing any dates today, we have been working on remasters for both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.”
The announcement is likely to be welcomed by longtime Fallout fans, especially since Fallout: New Vegas remains one of the franchise’s most popular entries despite launching more than a decade ago.
Bethesda also shared an update on the next mainline Fallout game, confirming that Fallout 5 is currently in preproduction. However, the studio made it clear that The Elder Scrolls 6 remains its primary development focus, meaning Fallout 5 is still a long-term project.
The studio stated:
“Fallout is one of our biggest priorities today. Fallout 5 remains our long-range destination, and we have multiple Fallout projects in active development right now.”
Another major announcement is Bethesda’s renewed partnership with Obsidian Entertainment. The developer behind Fallout: New Vegas is officially working alongside Bethesda on a new Fallout project. While the studio did not reveal what the project is, the announcement follows recent reports suggesting Obsidian shifted resources toward Fallout after discussions within Xbox Game Studios.
Bethesda confirmed the collaboration by saying:
“The wasteland continues to expand as we team up once again with our longtime friends at Obsidian Entertainment. We’re happy to confirm they’re working with us on a new Fallout project. We’ll have more to share in the future.”
The company has not confirmed whether this project is a sequel, spin-off, or another remake, leaving fans to speculate until additional details are revealed.
Support for Fallout 76 will also continue. Bethesda announced a new expansion called Raven Rock, scheduled to launch in 2027. The DLC will serve as a prequel to Fallout 3, expanding the series’ timeline before the events of the 2008 game. While Bethesda did not connect the DLC to the Fallout 3 remaster, the announcement has sparked speculation that both projects could release within a similar timeframe.
Beyond Fallout, Bethesda confirmed changes to development across The Elder Scrolls franchise. ZeniMax Online Studios, the team behind The Elder Scrolls Online, will work more closely with Bethesda Game Studios on future Elder Scrolls projects while continuing to support ESO with new content.
According to Bethesda, bringing its studios together under a more unified development structure will allow teams to share resources and improve long-term support for its major franchises.
