Apple has officially introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, and this year’s Pro models put more attention on camera hardware, sustained performance, battery life, and on-device AI. The new phones arrive with Apple’s A20 Pro chip, a 48MP main camera with a variable aperture, a larger vapor chamber cooling system, and storage options reaching 2TB.
The camera system is arguably the biggest change on the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Apple has moved beyond the fixed-aperture main camera used on previous models and added a 48MP Fusion main camera with a mechanical variable aperture. The six-blade aperture can adjust how much light reaches the sensor, giving the camera more control in both bright and dark conditions. Apple says the aperture can open wider in low-light scenes to capture more light, while a narrower setting can provide greater depth of field when shooting in brighter conditions.

The variable aperture also gives the iPhone 18 Pro a more traditional camera-style control. Users can manually adjust the aperture alongside other Pro controls, while the Camera app adds options such as shutter speed, white balance, histogram controls, and additional photographic adjustments. Apple is also targeting video creators with improvements to Dolby Vision HDR recording and other video tools.
Under the hood, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max use the new A20 Pro chip, built using a 2nm manufacturing process. The chip features a six-core CPU with two performance-focused cores and four efficiency cores, alongside a seven-core GPU and a 32-core Neural Processing Unit. Apple claims the new GPU delivers up to a 40% performance increase compared with the previous generation.

Apple has also changed the cooling system to help the A20 Pro maintain its performance during longer workloads. The iPhone 18 Pro models use a next-generation vapor chamber with three times the surface area of the system used in the iPhone 17 Pro. This should be particularly useful for gaming, video editing, AI processing, and other tasks that can keep the processor under load for extended periods.
Battery life gets a sizable upgrade as well. Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches up to 45 hours. The company also says the iPhone 18 Pro can reach a 50% charge in 15 minutes using wired charging, while the Pro Max can provide up to seven hours of video playback after five minutes of charging.
Apple has made a few changes to the front of the phones, including a smaller Dynamic Island that can display up to three Live Activities at once. The Pro models also introduce Apple’s new C2 modem, which is designed to improve cellular connectivity and upload performance. The phones continue to use a premium Pro-series design with color-matched rear glass and are available in deep black, silver, glacier, and a new burgundy finish.
Storage has also been expanded for buyers who need more space. Both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are available with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB configurations. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299, with both entry configurations offering 256GB of storage. That represents a $100 increase over the starting prices of their predecessors.
Preorders for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max begin on September 12, with retail availability scheduled for September 18. With the A20 Pro chip, variable-aperture camera, larger cooling system, longer battery life, and 2TB storage option, Apple is positioning the new Pro models as a more capable upgrade for photographers, gamers, and users who rely on their phones for demanding workloads.
