Hideo Kojima’s Physint has taken an unexpected turn, with Kojima Productions confirming that Xbox will now partner with the studio after PlayStation canceled the project earlier this year. The change gives the long-awaited stealth action game a new path forward, but it also raises questions about where Physint will eventually be released.
Physint was first revealed during a PlayStation State of Play presentation in 2024. At the time, the game was presented as a new action-espionage project from Kojima Productions, with PlayStation attached as its publishing partner. Kojima described the project as a return to the stealth action genre, a style closely associated with his earlier work.
That partnership has now come to an end. According to Kojima, PlayStation Studios informed Kojima Productions in mid-June 2026 that it would cancel the Physint project. The reason behind Sony’s decision has not been publicly disclosed, leaving the circumstances surrounding the cancellation unclear.
Rather than abandoning the project, Kojima Productions spent the following three months searching for another company willing to publish and support the game. Those discussions eventually led the studio back to Xbox, which has already worked with Kojima Productions on OD, the upcoming horror title being developed for Microsoft’s platform ecosystem.
Kojima confirmed the new partnership in a post on X, explaining that the two companies found they shared a similar view of where the industry is heading. He also made it clear that the change in publisher does not mean development has stopped.
Kojima’s full post reads as follows:
“As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project. PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner. In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in XBOX a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward.”
The new Xbox partnership could have significant consequences for Physint. The game was originally expected to be associated closely with PlayStation, but that arrangement is no longer in place. While Kojima Productions and Xbox have not announced the complete platform lineup, the project is now unlikely to follow the original PS5-exclusive publishing plan.
An Xbox release would be the most obvious possibility following the new agreement, although the exact nature of Xbox’s involvement remains unclear. It is also possible that Physint could eventually arrive on PC, particularly given Microsoft’s current approach to releasing more of its games across multiple platforms. However, no PC version has been confirmed at this stage.

The timing of Sony’s decision is another part of the story that could attract attention. PlayStation’s cancellation of Physint came around the same period when the company was reported to be putting greater emphasis on PS5-exclusive projects. There is no confirmation that this strategy was connected to the cancellation, however, and neither Sony nor Kojima Productions has provided an explanation linking the two events.
For Kojima Productions, keeping Physint alive appears to have been important enough to justify finding another publishing partner rather than shelving the project. The studio now has the opportunity to continue development under a different arrangement, although the change could also require adjustments to the game’s production plans and eventual launch strategy.
The project is still expected to be some distance from release. Physint was announced in 2024 and has been in development for several years, but Kojima Productions has yet to provide a firm release date. The publisher change could also mean that details about platforms, release timing, and gameplay will remain limited while the studio works through the transition.

For players who have been waiting for Kojima’s next major stealth action game, the most important update is that Physint has not been canceled outright. Instead, it has moved from its original PlayStation publishing arrangement to a new partnership with Xbox. Kojima Productions says development is continuing, and the coming months should reveal more about what this new direction means for the game’s final release.
