Rockstar Games is currently focused on Grand Theft Auto 6, which is expected to become one of the biggest video game releases ever. However, before the studio became almost entirely associated with GTA and Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar had another popular franchise that attracted a dedicated fan base: Midnight Club.
The street racing series launched in 2000 and became known for its open-world environments, high-speed races, vehicle customization, and arcade-style driving mechanics. Despite receiving positive reviews and gaining popularity, the franchise reportedly never received the same level of attention inside Rockstar as its other major projects.
Former Rockstar San Diego senior designer Kris Roberts, who worked on the Midnight Club series, recently shared details about the canceled Midnight Club 5 during an interview with Kiwi Talkz. According to Roberts, the team had already started working on the next entry, with early map development underway before Rockstar eventually canceled the project.

Roberts explained that several issues contributed to the cancellation of Midnight Club 5, including disagreements between Rockstar New York and the San Diego development team.
Reasons Behind Midnight Club 5 Cancellation
According to Roberts, the project faced multiple challenges:
- Rockstar San Diego missed several deadlines during the development of Midnight Club: Los Angeles.
- Internal disagreements developed between Rockstar offices regarding the future of the franchise.
- Creative differences affected the direction and support of the project.
- Rockstar’s biggest franchises, especially GTA, received more attention and resources.
Roberts described the situation as difficult for the development team, saying that Midnight Club was often viewed as less important compared to Grand Theft Auto.
Despite the franchise’s success, Roberts claimed there was an internal attitude that Midnight Club was not GTA, which limited its position within Rockstar. He explained that the team believed they were creating high-quality games but still felt they were treated as a secondary project.
Midnight Club’s Legacy at Rockstar Games
The Midnight Club franchise released four main entries, with Midnight Club: Los Angeles being the final major release in 2008. The game competed with popular racing franchises and built a strong community thanks to its city-based racing design and extensive car customization options.
However, as Rockstar expanded the GTA and Red Dead Redemption franchises, Midnight Club was left behind. The cancellation of Midnight Club 5 eventually ended plans for a new entry, and the team working on the series was reportedly dissolved.

For years, fans have requested a return of the franchise, especially as open-world racing games continue to grow. While Rockstar has not announced any plans for a new Midnight Club game, the latest comments from Roberts provide insight into why the series disappeared despite having a dedicated audience.
With Rockstar preparing for the launch of GTA 6, the studio’s future projects will likely remain focused on its biggest properties. For Midnight Club fans, the possibility of a comeback remains uncertain.
