ASUS has expanded its Republic of Gamers (ROG) accessory lineup with the introduction of the ROG USB-C10G, a compact external adapter designed to bring 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to compatible desktops and laptops. The new adapter is aimed at users who need faster wired networking but either lack an available PCIe slot or prefer a portable solution that can be used across multiple systems.
As multi-gig internet connections and high-speed network storage become more common, external 10Gb Ethernet adapters are attracting interest from gamers, creators, and professionals. ASUS is positioning the ROG USB-C10G as a premium option that combines portability with high bandwidth, although users should verify that their hardware supports the required USB standard before making the upgrade.
The ROG USB-C10G measures 85 × 32 × 19 mm and weighs just 38 grams without the cable, making it easy to carry alongside a laptop or store in a desktop setup. Instead of using a permanently attached cable, ASUS has equipped the adapter with a USB Type-C port, allowing users to connect the included short USB-C cable or replace it with another compatible cable if necessary. The package also includes a USB-C to USB-A adapter, providing additional flexibility for systems that still rely on traditional USB ports.
The adapter requires a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 port to deliver its full 20Gbps bandwidth. While ASUS has not officially disclosed the networking controller used in the device, it is expected to feature the Realtek RTL8159 chipset, which is already used in several existing 10GbE USB adapters.
The USB interface plays an important role in overall performance. While the adapter supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet, systems equipped with only USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) ports are unlikely to reach maximum throughput because of USB protocol overhead. Similar adapters based on the same controller typically achieve transfer speeds between 6Gbps and 8Gbps when connected to Gen 2 ports.
The compatibility limitation is particularly relevant for Mac users. Apple’s current Mac lineup supports USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB4, and Thunderbolt, but does not support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. As a result, Mac users may not be able to take full advantage of the adapter’s 10GbE capabilities. Likewise, using the included USB-C to USB-A adapter will also reduce available bandwidth, preventing maximum network performance.
ASUS has yet to announce official global pricing. However, an early retail listing from Norway priced the adapter at approximately US$139 including 25% VAT. Based on regional taxes, the international retail price is expected to fall between US$100 and US$120.
