Rocket League Confirmed as First Unreal Engine 6 Title at RLCS 2026 Paris

Epic Games and Psyonix have confirmed during the Rocket League Championship Series 2026 event in Paris that Rocket League will be the first game to adopt Unreal Engine 6. The announcement was made on stage at the RLCS event, though both companies avoided sharing technical details about the engine or what changes players can expect in the near term.

The reveal places Rocket League, developed by Psyonix and owned by Epic Games, in a unique position as an early adopter of Epic’s next-generation engine technology. However, beyond the confirmation itself, no gameplay footage, feature breakdown, or performance improvements were shown, leaving much of Unreal Engine 6 still unannounced publicly.

Unreal Engine 6 is still in early development based on previous statements from Epic leadership. In May 2025, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney stated that UE6 is expected to be a few years away from full release, with early preview builds potentially arriving within a 2–3 year window. According to Sweeney, the new engine is being designed to unify multiple development branches inside Epic’s ecosystem, rather than serving only as a visual upgrade over Unreal Engine 5.

One of the key engineering goals for Unreal Engine 6 is to improve simulation performance by moving away from the long-standing single-threaded limitations found in earlier engine versions. The shift toward a more multithreaded simulation model is intended to help modern games handle more complex systems, particularly in large-scale or physics-heavy environments.

Sweeney has also described Unreal Engine 6 as a convergence point between traditional game development and Epic’s creator ecosystem. This includes deeper integration with Fortnite’s user-generated content tools and the Verse programming language, which is expected to play a larger role in how gameplay logic is structured across projects. The aim is to reduce fragmentation between different development pipelines and create a shared foundation for both AAA games and creator-driven experiences.

For Rocket League, this transition could eventually lead to internal technical changes, although Epic has not clarified whether the game will receive a full engine upgrade at launch or transition gradually over time. Given the lack of confirmed details, it is still unclear how much of Unreal Engine 6’s architecture will be visible to players when early builds appear.

Looking at previous engine transitions, Unreal Engine 5 was first revealed in 2020, followed by Early Access in 2021 and a full release in 2022. That roughly two-year gap between announcement and production readiness provides a rough comparison, though Epic has not confirmed if Unreal Engine 6 will follow a similar timeline.

For now, the RLCS 2026 announcement mainly signals that Unreal Engine 6 is moving from internal development toward early real-world testing. More concrete details are expected as Epic Games approaches its preview phase, which could provide a clearer picture of how the engine will reshape future titles across its ecosystem, including Fortnite and other major releases.
