Darksiders Warmastered Edition Gets Surprise PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam Update With Vulkan Support and Photo Mod

Nearly a decade after its release, Darksiders Warmastered Edition has received a fresh update for modern platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam. The release arrives quietly but brings several technical improvements, controller enhancements, and bug fixes that improve compatibility across newer hardware and handheld gaming devices.

The biggest change in the update is the move to Vulkan API support on PC. With the updated renderer, the game now requires Vulkan 1.3-compatible hardware to run. While that may sound demanding for older systems, support still extends to graphics cards dating back to AMD’s Radeon R9 series and NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 700 lineup. This means most gaming PCs built within the last decade should remain compatible with the updated version.

For Linux users and handheld gamers running SteamOS through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer, the Vulkan addition could provide better overall stability and performance. Before this patch, the game already held a Silver rating on ProtonDB, with most user reports mentioning media codec issues affecting cutscenes rather than gameplay-related problems. The updated rendering backend may help smooth out some of those compatibility concerns on portable gaming systems.

Another notable addition is a built-in photo mode. Players can now pause the game, set up camera angles, and capture screenshots directly through Steam’s screenshot tools or Windows capture shortcuts. While the feature is fairly basic compared to newer releases, it gives players more flexibility when revisiting the game’s environments and combat scenes on upgraded hardware.

Steam Input support has also been expanded. Controllers equipped with gyro functionality, motion sensors, or integrated IMUs are now better supported in-game. This includes newer controller hardware and handheld devices that use motion controls for aiming or camera adjustments. The improvements should make gameplay feel smoother across a wider range of devices.

The update also resolves several lingering bugs. One of the more noticeable fixes addresses reticule issues at lower resolutions, which had become a common complaint among handheld users, especially those playing on the Steam Deck. Correcting UI scaling and aiming behavior should improve the overall portable experience.

Originally developed by Vigil Games and later published under THQ Nordic, Darksiders Warmastered Edition continues to see support years after launch. Although the latest patch does not introduce new gameplay content, the technical updates make the action-adventure title more accessible on current-generation systems and modern PC setups.
