Ubisoft has cancelled its in-development project Alterra, a cozy sandbox title that reportedly took inspiration from games like Animal Crossing and Minecraft. The information comes via Insider Gaming, which cited internal sources who said the decision was communicated to staff on April 21, bringing development to a stop.
According to those familiar with the matter, team members working on Alterra were informed earlier in the day and subsequently released from their duties on the project. Despite the abrupt halt, there have been no layoffs directly linked to the cancellation. Instead, Ubisoft is expected to reassign developers to other ongoing projects within the company.
In a statement shared with IGN, Ubisoft explained that it routinely reviews projects throughout development. The company stated that this process is part of its broader effort to ensure alignment with strategic priorities, quality expectations, and long-term market viability. Projects that fail to meet those benchmarks may be discontinued.
The move reflects Ubisoft’s current direction as it continues to adjust its portfolio and control development costs. The publisher has recently taken a more cautious approach toward upcoming releases and legacy content, including internal discussions around projects tied to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
