Kena: Scars of Kosmora Announced for PS5 and PC, Expands Story and Elemental Combat

After the release of Kena: Bridge of Spirits, developer Ember Lab has officially announced its next project, Kena: Scars of Kosmora. The new title continues Kena’s story and is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and PC later this year. Rather than shifting away from what defined the original game, the studio has focused on expanding Kena’s role and abilities while introducing new systems that build on lessons learned during the first release.

In Scars of Kosmora, Kena is no longer an inexperienced Spirit Guide. She is older, well-known, and sought after for her abilities. Her journey takes her to the island of Kosmora, a place made up of distinct regions and cultures shaped by a tragic past. Kena travels there in search of answers about an affliction that has followed her throughout her life. Shortly after arriving, she encounters a powerful spirit that fractures her staff, an event that changes the course of her journey. For a Spirit Guide, the staff represents both identity and purpose, and in Kena’s case, it was also sustaining her life.

With her staff damaged, Kena must turn to an ancient and largely forgotten form of Spirit Guiding centered on Alchemy. This new approach allows her to manipulate elemental forces, adding depth to both exploration and combat. Elemental spirit companions play a key role in this system. These companions accompany Kena, grow stronger over time, and unlock new abilities as their bond deepens. Each spirit is tied to a specific element and connected to others across the world, suggesting a broader system that extends throughout Kosmora.

Combat remains a central part of the experience, with corrupted souls still present to challenge players. Ember Lab has emphasized that Kena’s growth is reflected in gameplay, with new elemental abilities, spirit-based mechanics, and expanded combat options designed to add strategy to encounters and boss fights. The goal is to make Kena feel more capable while still maintaining a sense of danger.

The studio has also confirmed that partnering with PlayStation Studios has allowed the team to build a larger world with more focused region design and progression. While story details are being kept secret to avoid spoilers, Ember Lab has stated that narrative remains a major focus, with an emotional journey planned for both returning players and newcomers. Kena: Scars of Kosmora is expected to receive more updates in the coming months ahead of its release on PlayStation 5 and PC.
