Netflix has officially greenlit a live-action Assassin’s Creed television series, Ubisoft confirmed today. The project is the first to come out of a partnership signed in 2020 between Netflix and Ubisoft to develop content based on the video game franchise.
The series will follow characters across different historical settings as they are drawn into the conflict between two secret factions. One group seeks to control humanity’s future, while the other fights to preserve free will. This premise mirrors the core theme of the long-running Assassin’s Creed games, which center on the battle between the Assassins and the Templars.
Roberto Patino and David Wiener have been named as showrunners and executive producers. Patino has worked on Westworld, Sons of Anarchy, and DMZ, while Wiener’s credits include Halo, Homecoming, and The Killing.
“We’ve been fans of Assassin’s Creed since its release in 2007,” Patino and Wiener said in a statement. “Every day we work on this show, we come away excited and humbled by the possibilities that Assassin’s Creed opens to us. Beneath the scope, spectacle, parkour, and action is a human story about people searching for purpose and struggling with questions of identity, destiny, and faith. It is about power, violence, greed, and revenge. But most of all, it is about human connection across cultures and time, and what happens when those connections are lost. We have a strong team at Ubisoft and Netflix supporting us, and we are focused on delivering a show that will resonate with fans worldwide.”
Assassin’s Creed is one of Ubisoft’s most successful franchises, with over 200 million copies sold since its debut in 2007. Known for its historical settings and stealth gameplay, the series has built a large following over the years.
The latest entry in the series, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, was released earlier this year. Set in Feudal Japan, it is available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S.
Netflix has not yet announced a release date or casting details for the series.
