During the latest Sony PlayStation State of Play presentation, IO Interactive unveiled a new story trailer for 007 First Light, offering a deeper look at its reimagining of James Bond’s early career. The trailer outlines Bond’s recruitment into MI6 and his induction into a revived 00 programme, setting up a narrative centered on discipline, loyalty, and global espionage.
Unlike previous portrayals of the character in games, 007 First Light introduces a younger and less experienced Bond. Portrayed by Patrick Gibson, this version of 007 is still learning how to operate within the rigid framework of British intelligence. The trailer opens with missions in Iceland, where Bond’s quick thinking and calm decision-making under pressure attract the attention of MI6. However, his tendency to act on instinct rather than follow orders creates tension as he enters formal training.
At the center of that training is John Greenway, played by Lennie James. A former 00 agent, Greenway now serves as the programme’s instructor. He believes in strict procedure and discipline, values that frequently clash with Bond’s improvisational style. Their dynamic appears to form a core part of the story, highlighting the contrast between experience and raw potential.

Bond also finds an unexpected ally in M, portrayed by Priyanga Burford. While others question Bond’s readiness, M recognizes his ability to take control of difficult situations. Her support suggests that Bond’s independence may be both his greatest asset and his greatest risk as he moves deeper into the intelligence world.
The main conflict centers on the return of 009, a former British operative who has gone rogue. His re-emergence becomes the first major test for the reinstated 00 programme. Bond and Greenway are tasked with tracking him across multiple regions, including the Carpathian Mountains and the shadowy black market hub known as Aleph. The trailer hints at a mix of covert operations and direct confrontations, with Bond forced to navigate complex alliances.

Among the individuals he encounters is Bawma, portrayed by Lenny Kravitz, whose role appears to blur the line between ally and adversary. Charlotte Roth, played by Noémie Nakai, is another figure whose true intentions remain unclear. These relationships add uncertainty to Bond’s mission, reinforcing the theme that trust is never guaranteed in the world of espionage.
In a statement accompanying the reveal, Hakan Abrak, CEO of IO Interactive, explained that the studio aimed to explore the formative experiences that shape Bond into the agent known around the world. Rather than focusing on an established legend, the game looks at the challenges and decisions that define his early path.

007 First Light is scheduled to release on May 27, 2026. While full gameplay details were not discussed during the broadcast, the emphasis on character development and international intrigue suggests a narrative-driven experience. Additional information about platforms and gameplay systems is expected closer to launch as IO Interactive shares further updates.
