Xiaomi’s camera department has released new information about its upcoming camera software update, which will roll out in stages as part of the Surge OS 2 mid-year OTA. The update includes a redesigned camera interface and new features aimed at improving usability across a wide range of Xiaomi and Redmi smartphones.

The updated camera app is based on feedback collected from users. According to the product manager, users reported issues such as inconsistent layout, unclear function organization, and a cluttered interface that made it harder to navigate during shooting. The new version introduces a cleaner layout, reorganizes control zones, and reduces the amount of the screen covered by UI elements. Professional mode has also been revised to make it easier for regular users to access, while still offering manual controls and presets for advanced users. More than 140 icons and 600 interface screens have been redrawn, and adjustments have been made for international compatibility.
The update will be released in three phases. The first group of devices began receiving the update on May 28. These include Xiaomi 15 series, Xiaomi 14 series, MIX Fold 4, MIX Flip, and the Redmi K80 and K70 models. The second batch will receive the update by June 20 and includes the Xiaomi 13 series, MIX Fold 3, Civi 4 Pro, and Redmi K60 and Note 14 models. A third phase, planned for July, will cover older models like the Xiaomi 12S series, Redmi K60E, and several Redmi Note 13 models.

New features are also part of the rollout. A quick switch option between 28mm and 35mm focal lengths is now supported on models from the Xiaomi 14 series down to the Redmi Note 13 Pro. Portrait mode focal lengths are now aligned with photo mode, creating a more consistent shooting experience. Custom photography styles in professional mode, EV adjustment, and additional personalization features are included in this update. Xiaomi is also expanding support for camera themes, shutter sound options, and watermark styles.
The development team shared details on how the new interface was designed. Three layout options were tested. The selected version uses labeled icons and images for easier recognition and quicker operation. The goal was to keep the learning curve low while improving daily use. The other designs, which were more minimal or used gesture-based controls, were rejected due to higher complexity.
In response to user questions, Xiaomi confirmed that more watermark designs will be added later this year. Devices that support preset parameters will also increase the number of saved presets from 15 to 50. For video improvements, models such as the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and 15 series will receive optimizations for 4K 60fps recording in future updates.
