Valve Launches Steam Machine, Steam Frame VR Headset, and Steam Controller

Valve has officially announced its next-generation Steam hardware lineup, confirming long-running rumors. The company introduced three new products: the Steam Machine, the Steam Frame VR headset, and the Steam Controller.

The new Steam Machine succeeds the original model introduced over a decade ago. It features updated hardware designed to work with SteamOS and handle a broad range of PC games. Storage options include 512 GB and 2 TB SSDs with microSD expansion. The system is powered by a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 processor paired with RDNA 3 graphics.

Valve states it can handle 4K gaming at 60 FPS, with support for ray tracing and FSR. The Steam Machine includes 16 GB DDR5 system memory and 8 GB GDDR6 VRAM. Connectivity options consist of DisplayPort 1.4 for 4K at 240 Hz, HDMI 2.0, Ethernet, USB-C 10 Gbps, and four USB-A ports. The system comes with a Steam Controller and supports 2.4 GHz wireless, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth for peripherals. Valve has designed the Steam Machine as a compact black box with a customizable LED status bar for living room setups.

Valve’s Steam Frame is the company’s first VR headset. It is lightweight, weighing 185 g alone or 440 g with the included headstrap, which integrates the facial interface, audio, and rear battery. The headset uses a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor with 16 GB LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1 TB of storage. A dual 2160×2160 pancake display setup runs at 144 Hz with a 110-degree field of view.

Eye-tracking enables foveated streaming to improve visual clarity where the user is looking. Four outward cameras and an IR illuminator provide tracking in various environments. The headset includes integrated audio and a 21.6 Wh battery, while supporting SteamOS features such as suspend/resume. Steam Frame Controllers use magnetic TMR thumbsticks, capacitive finger sensing, and offer up to 40 hours of battery life.

The Steam Controller is designed to work across all Steam platforms. It offers three connection methods: proprietary wireless using the Steam Controller Puck, Bluetooth, or USB. The Puck provides low-latency input with about 8 milliseconds of lag at 5 meters and supports up to four controllers simultaneously.

The controller features magnetic TMR thumbsticks, capacitive grips, pressure-sensitive trackpads, a 6-axis IMU, four programmable grip buttons, and four haptic motors for detailed feedback. It is compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux, handheld devices, phones via Steam Link, and all Steam hardware.

Valve’s new lineup focuses on modernizing its hardware for SteamOS while keeping compatibility across traditional PC platforms, supporting both gaming and VR experiences.
