Ubisoft is reportedly changing its plans for the future of the Far Cry franchise. According to a new report from Insider Gaming, the publisher has canceled the multiplayer extraction shooter known internally as Maverick and replaced it with a new project codenamed Kodiak.
Maverick was previously rumored to be one of two Far Cry games in development, with the second project being the next mainline entry in the series, internally called Blackbird and widely expected to launch as Far Cry 7. While Ubisoft has not officially announced either title, reports over the past year suggested that both projects were moving forward in parallel.
The latest report claims that Maverick is no longer in development. Instead, Ubisoft has shifted its focus to Kodiak, which has reportedly completed the concept stage and entered production.
Although Kodiak is said to be built using technology and development work from Maverick, the game will no longer follow the extraction shooter formula. Instead, it is described as an open-world first-person shooter where player interactions and player-driven stories play a larger role in the overall experience.
By reusing parts of Maverick’s development, Ubisoft can continue building on work that has already been completed while moving in a different gameplay direction. The report suggests that Kodiak will offer a different experience from what was originally planned for Maverick, though no gameplay details have been shared at this time.
Both Kodiak and Blackbird are reportedly being developed at Vantage Studios, the Ubisoft studio involved with several major franchises, including Rainbow Six and Assassin’s Creed: Hexe.
Earlier this year, Vantage Studios co-CEO Charlie Guillemot described Blackbird as an “act one” for the Far Cry franchise. While he did not explain what that means, the statement fueled speculation that Ubisoft is preparing a fresh direction for the series instead of simply following previous entries.
