TerraMaster has introduced the D8 Hybrid 2, a new hybrid direct-attached storage (DAS) enclosure built for content creators, professionals, small businesses, and home users who need both high-speed storage and large-capacity data archives. The new model combines four SATA HDD or SSD bays with four M.2 NVMe SSD slots, allowing users to manage active projects and long-term storage from a single device. Depending on the installed drives, the enclosure supports a total storage capacity of up to 152TB.
The D8 Hybrid 2 connects through USB 3.2 Gen 2, providing up to 10 Gbps of bandwidth. TerraMaster says a single NVMe SSD can reach read speeds of up to 1020 MB/s, while four hard drives configured in RAID can deliver up to 980 MB/s. This makes the enclosure suitable for handling large files, including 4K and 8K video projects, photo libraries, and media production workloads. According to the company, transferring a 5GB HD movie can take around five seconds under ideal conditions.
TerraMaster Power Management (TPM) is a new power management system designed to improve energy efficiency while reducing drive wake-up times. The company says the technology also helps maintain stable performance during continuous workloads while lowering overall power consumption.
The enclosure features an updated chassis with a front-mounted power button and improved airflow. TerraMaster continues to use its Push-Lock tool-free drive trays, allowing SATA drives to be installed or replaced without tools. The M.2 NVMe SSD slots are also easy to access through a side sliding cover, with hand-tightened screws simplifying installation.
The hybrid storage design allows users to keep frequently accessed files on fast NVMe SSDs while storing less frequently used data on larger hard drives. This setup is useful for photographers, video editors, surveillance storage, and anyone managing large collections of files. Cooling is handled by a temperature-controlled Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) fan rated for more than 50,000 hours of operation, helping maintain stable temperatures during extended use.
The D8 Hybrid 2 supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and NAS platforms without requiring additional drivers. It is compatible with multiple file systems, including NTFS, APFS, EXT4, FAT32, and exFAT, making it easy to move between different operating systems. The enclosure can also connect directly to computers, servers, televisions, set-top boxes, and Thunderbolt-equipped devices using its USB Type-C interface.
For backup, Windows users receive TPC Backupper, which supports incremental and differential backup methods, while macOS users can rely on native Time Machine support. The enclosure also serves as an expansion unit for TerraMaster NAS systems running TOS 5 and TOS 6, supporting storage pools, RAID configurations, and snapshot features. It is also compatible with Windows Server, Linux, Proxmox, TrueNAS, and Unraid, giving users flexibility across a wide range of storage environments.
