Team Cherry has shared new updates on Hollow Knight: Silksong, confirming the game’s first major expansion and outlining plans for the original Hollow Knight on upcoming hardware. The announcement comes as Silksong’s launch year draws to a close, with the studio reflecting on the game’s reception while setting expectations for content arriving in 2026.
The expansion, titled Sea of Sorrow, is currently in development and will be released as a free update for all Silksong players next year. Team Cherry describes the expansion as a continuation of Hornet’s journey, this time centered around a maritime theme. Players will explore new regions set across and beneath salt-covered seas, expanding the game world beyond what is currently available. As with previous content updates from the studio, the expansion will include additional bosses, new tools, and fresh challenges designed to integrate with Silksong’s existing systems.
While the developer did not provide a release date, it confirmed that work on Sea of Sorrow is already well underway. Further details, including gameplay footage and specific features, are expected to be shared closer to launch. A short teaser was released to hint at the setting and tone of the expansion, though most elements remain under wraps for now.
Team Cherry also confirmed that Hollow Knight: Silksong has surpassed seven million copies sold since its release. This figure does not include players accessing the game through Xbox Game Pass, which the studio said has also contributed significantly to its player base. According to Team Cherry, the size and activity of the community have exceeded expectations, with fan creations, mods, and shared strategies continuing to shape how the game is played.

Alongside Silksong-related news, the studio announced that an updated version of the original Hollow Knight is in development for the Nintendo Switch 2. The new edition will bring technical improvements similar to those introduced with Silksong on the platform. These upgrades include higher resolutions, improved visual effects, and support for higher frame-rate modes.

Owners of Hollow Knight on the current Nintendo Switch will be able to upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition at no cost when it launches in 2026. Team Cherry confirmed that this upgrade path will mirror its approach with Silksong, allowing existing players to access the improved version without purchasing the game again.
To prepare for the Switch 2 release, Team Cherry is also updating Hollow Knight on existing platforms. These updates focus on feature additions and bug fixes, ensuring consistency across versions ahead of the new hardware launch. PC players can already access several of these changes through public beta branches available on Steam and GOG.
The PC beta expands display support with full 16:10 and 21:9 aspect ratio compatibility. This update responds to long-standing requests from players using ultrawide monitors and handheld devices like the Steam Deck. According to Team Cherry, further fixes and refinements are still in development, with a broader rollout planned for all players next year.
The studio acknowledged that managing ongoing development across Silksong, its upcoming expansion, and the original game has been a significant effort for a small team. Even so, Team Cherry indicated that more projects and updates are planned for 2026, though details will be shared at a later date.
For now, the developer plans to take a short break before returning to full production. With Sea of Sorrow in active development and a Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade confirmed, 2026 is shaping up to be a busy year for the Hollow Knight series and its growing player base.
