Take-Two Interactive has officially confirmed its support for Rockstar Games’ decision to delay the release of Grand Theft Auto VI into 2026. The announcement follows months of reports and leaks pointing to development challenges that made a 2025 launch unlikely. Longtime fans of the series had already braced themselves for a possible delay, and Rockstar’s recent message confirmed those expectations.

Initially, GTA VI was seen as a major driver for next-generation console sales, particularly the expected PlayStation 5 Pro. Analysts believed that the game’s launch would prompt many players to upgrade their hardware to get the best possible experience. With a planned console-exclusive release at launch, the title was positioned to be a key sales milestone for both game and hardware makers.
Rockstar stated that the delay was necessary to ensure the game meets the quality standards expected by the global player base. The studio apologized for the change in schedule and emphasized its focus on delivering a complete and polished product. The new internal target is reported to be May 2026, falling within Take-Two’s next financial year.
Despite missing the original window, Take-Two is confident in its release pipeline. Company chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick said that Rockstar will have the time needed to finish the game properly. In a statement, Zelnick noted that Grand Theft Auto VI is shaping up to be a major release and added that the company is committed to high standards. He stated that although the delay is significant, the long-term goals for growth and value remain unchanged.
This delay moves the launch out of the 2025 holiday season, which may affect projections for console sales during that period. However, Take-Two has assured shareholders that other titles in development will help maintain performance. The company continues to highlight its upcoming releases across various labels as part of a long-term strategy.
While the wait for GTA VI grows longer, interest in the game remains strong. Fans of the franchise are familiar with the studio’s lengthy development timelines, and previous entries have set a high bar. The extra time may help ensure the final release delivers the experience players have come to expect from the series.
Until then, Take-Two and Rockstar will focus on refining the title as they work toward a launch date in 2026.
