The long-delayed remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remains absent, but fans of the series received unexpected news during The Game Awards 2025. Lucasfilm Games and Arcanaut Studios officially revealed Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a new single-player, narrative-focused action role-playing game set in the Star Wars universe.
The announcement was made through a short teaser trailer shown during the event. While the video offered limited details, it confirmed the game’s tone and direction, along with the use of Unreal Engine 5 for its cinematic scenes. No gameplay footage or release window was provided, leaving many questions unanswered for now.
According to Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of The Old Republic is designed as a spiritual successor to the original Knights of the Old Republic. Rather than remaking or retelling an existing story, the new project aims to expand on the ideas that defined the classic RPG, including player-driven storytelling and moral choice systems tied to the light and dark sides of the Force.
The game is being led by Casey Hudson, who previously served as game director on the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and later on BioWare’s Mass Effect trilogy. Hudson is now heading Arcanaut Studios, a developer made up of experienced designers, writers, and artists with a background in story-focused games.
In the official description released alongside the teaser, the developers describe an interactive adventure set during a time when the galaxy stands at a turning point. Players will shape their journey through decisions that influence both the story and their character’s alignment. This approach mirrors the systems that helped define role-playing games in the early 2000s, while adapting them for modern hardware and engines.

Although the trailer focused on atmosphere rather than mechanics, the use of Unreal Engine 5 suggests a push toward detailed environments and cinematic presentation. Lucasfilm Games confirmed that the footage shown was captured in-engine, indicating that visual quality will play a key role in the overall experience.
At present, there is no confirmation regarding supported platforms, combat systems, or how closely the game will follow traditional RPG structures. The absence of a release timeframe also suggests that development is still in an early or mid-production stage.
For many fans, the announcement helps fill the gap left by the continued silence surrounding the Knights of the Old Republic remake. While that project has faced repeated delays and changes behind the scenes, Fate of the Old Republic represents a new path forward for Star Wars role-playing games outside of remasters and remakes.
Lucasfilm Games has stated that more details will be shared through the game’s official website once they become available. Until then, Star Wars: Fate of The Old Republic stands as one of the most notable Star Wars game announcements in recent years, signaling a renewed focus on single-player stories driven by choice and consequence.
