Sony Reportedly Delays PlayStation 6 Launch to 2028 or 2029 Amid Rising Memory Costs

Sony is reportedly reassessing the launch window for its next-generation PlayStation console, with internal discussions now pointing to a possible release in 2028 or even 2029.

According to a report from Bloomberg, people familiar with the company’s planning say the earlier 2027 target may no longer be realistic due to rising memory costs and ongoing semiconductor supply constraints.

The decision is said to be under review at the highest levels of Sony’s PlayStation strategic planning unit. Memory pricing has increased sharply over the past year, driven in large part by demand from AI servers, data centers, and high-performance GPUs. DRAM and next-generation graphics memory are now in tighter supply, making it harder for consumer electronics manufacturers to secure long-term allocation at sustainable pricing.

Earlier industry expectations pointed to 2027 as the likely start of the next console cycle. AMD has already confirmed that Microsoft’s next Xbox platform is scheduled for 2027, suggesting that Sony had originally been aligned with a similar timeframe. If Sony ultimately shifts to 2028 or 2029, Microsoft could enter the next hardware generation ahead of its main competitor.

On the hardware side, early reports suggest Sony is again working with Advanced Micro Devices on a custom chipset for the PlayStation 6. The rumored design is believed to target AMD’s upcoming “gfx13” architecture, potentially linked to its future UDNA graphics roadmap. Some claims also indicate that the system may feature up to 30 GB of GDDR7 memory, possibly using 3 GB modules to reach that capacity.

Deploying that amount of GDDR7 across millions of units would require significant supply commitments. GDDR7 production is still ramping, and priority is often given to enterprise and AI-focused hardware, where margins are higher. Consoles, which are typically sold with tighter hardware profit margins, face greater exposure to pricing volatility in the memory market.

Sony has not officially confirmed any delay, and the reported timeline remains subject to change. However, the broader market conditions suggest that component pricing and supply allocation are becoming central factors in next-generation console planning. If the PlayStation 6 does move to 2028 or 2029, it would mark a shift from previous generational cycles, where hardware launches were driven primarily by technology readiness rather than supply chain economics.
