Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon X Platform, Expanding Affordable High-Performance PC Offerings

January 7, 2025

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. has officially introduced the Snapdragon X Platform, the newest addition to the Snapdragon X Series compute portfolio. Aimed at mainstream devices in the $600 price range, this platform promises enhanced performance, extended battery life, and a seamless computing experience. The Snapdragon X is set to power the next generation of affordable laptops and compact desktops, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of personal computing.

At the core of the Snapdragon X platform is the Qualcomm Oryon CPU, an 8-core processor designed to provide balanced performance and efficiency. According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon X delivers up to 163% faster performance at ISO-power compared to competitors while consuming 168% less power at ISO-performance. This efficient power management is further complemented by a 45 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second) NPU, which handles advanced computing tasks with ease.

The platform also integrates a power-efficient GPU, tailored for tasks such as creating presentations, browsing the web, and streaming content. Qualcomm positions the Snapdragon X as an ideal solution for students, freelancers, and budget-conscious users seeking reliable laptops without compromising on performance.

Devices powered by the Snapdragon X are expected to launch in early 2025, with leading manufacturers like Acer, ASUS, Dell Technologies, HP, and Lenovo already onboard.

In an industry-first announcement, Qualcomm revealed plans for a mini desktop PC powered by the Snapdragon X Series platform. This compact form factor represents a significant step forward in portable computing, offering flexibility and adaptability for developers, businesses, and everyday consumers. Full details on this new device are expected to be unveiled soon.

Windows 11 continues to integrate deeply with Snapdragon platforms, with over 50 applications now leveraging the NPU for advanced capabilities. These include popular VPNs, security tools, cloud storage services, and even specialized software for music production, such as Digital Audio Workstations (DAW) and Virtual Studio Technology (VST) instruments.

Notably, Snapdragon-exclusive apps like the Moises Live music app highlight the platform’s growing ecosystem. Over the past year, native app development for Snapdragon has tripled, signaling increased adoption and innovation.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X launch is supported by collaborations with major industry players. Alex Katouzian, group general manager of mobile, compute, and XR at Qualcomm Technologies, highlighted the platform’s potential:

“The Snapdragon X Series portfolio offers the most powerful, intelligent, and power-efficient processors for Windows in their class. These advancements make Snapdragon-powered devices an excellent choice for users seeking high-performance laptops that can handle diverse workloads.”

Microsoft’s Pavan Davuluri, corporate vice president of Windows + Devices, reinforced this vision:

“The introduction of Snapdragon X marks a new wave of PC innovation. It enables the latest technologies to reach a wider audience while maintaining strong performance and long-lasting battery life.”

With the Snapdragon X Platform, Qualcomm aims to redefine the mainstream PC market. By enabling premium features and high performance at a competitive price point, the company is setting the stage for the widespread adoption of more capable, energy-efficient devices.

The platform not only brings cutting-edge computing to a broader audience but also introduces innovative form factors like the upcoming mini desktop PC. These advancements underscore Qualcomm’s commitment to driving the next phase of personal computing evolution.
