MSI Z890 MPG Carbon Motherboard Leaked: Supports Intel’s Core Ultra 200K Processors

September 16, 2024

MSI has officially revealed its Z890 MPG Carbon motherboard, becoming the second Z890 model to be publicly confirmed, following the BIOSTAR Z890 SILVER. This upcoming motherboard will be compatible with Intel’s highly anticipated Core Ultra 200K processors, which are expected to launch soon. The Z890 platform is set to accommodate Intel’s new processors, designed for high-performance computing with cutting-edge features.

At the Taipei Computer Show in June, various motherboard manufacturers previewed their latest products, including several that will be part of the Z890 series. However, Intel had placed restrictions on companies from disclosing that these motherboards were indeed Z890 models. BIOSTAR was the first to break this silence with its Z890 SILVER, making it the first officially confirmed Z890 motherboard. Now, MSI has followed suit with the unveiling of its Z890 MPG Carbon.

Intel is expected to launch its Core Ultra 200K processors on October 10. These processors will require motherboards featuring the LGA-1851 socket and Z890 chipset, a combination poised to deliver substantial performance enhancements. This anticipation has led to speculation that many motherboard manufacturers will unveil their Z890-based products around the same time.

MSI’s Z890 MPG Carbon, though not showcased during Computex 2024, has now been revealed through official renderings. Visually, it closely resembles MSI’s X870 motherboard, which was designed for AMD’s Ryzen processors. Both models feature a trio of PCIe x16 slots, ensuring robust multi-GPU support, and come equipped with dual Ethernet ports offering speeds of 2.5G and 5G. Wi-Fi 7 connectivity is also standard, providing faster wireless data transfer rates for high-speed networking.

The primary design difference between the MSI Z890 MPG Carbon and the X870 lies in the placement of the 8-pin power connector, which has been adjusted on the Z890 to accommodate the different socket and power requirements of Intel’s Core Ultra 200K processors. This subtle change reflects the nuanced engineering that MSI has employed in crafting a motherboard that maximizes the potential of Intel’s next-generation chips.

A significant improvement in the Z890 MPG Carbon motherboard is its enhanced connectivity options. While the X870 model offers a single USB Type-C port, the Z890 MPG Carbon steps up by featuring two Thunderbolt interfaces. These Thunderbolt ports offer greater versatility for connecting high-speed peripherals, although the exact version of the Thunderbolt standard has yet to be confirmed. Given the trend towards USB4 and advanced Thunderbolt implementations, these ports could be a valuable asset for users looking to expand their system’s capabilities.

The X870 motherboards, designed for AMD Ryzen processors, are expected to hit the market by the end of September. In contrast, the Z890 series, which includes MSI’s MPG Carbon model, will likely be released on October 24, aligning with the launch of Intel’s Core Ultra 200K processors. This coordination suggests a significant wave of product announcements in the coming weeks as manufacturers prepare for the release of Intel’s latest CPUs.

With its powerful feature set, the MSI Z890 MPG Carbon motherboard positions itself as a formidable option for those building high-performance desktop systems. The inclusion of Thunderbolt interfaces, advanced networking capabilities, and PCIe expansion slots make it well-suited for gaming, content creation, and professional workloads. As the release date approaches, more details are expected to emerge, shedding further light on what this motherboard and the Z890 platform will offer to enthusiasts and professionals alike.
