A DIY keyboard project is taking the split mechanical keyboard concept in a different direction by adding built-in joysticks designed for gaming, mouse control, and one-handed use. Called Tiwaz, the open-source keyboard was created by German maker Timo Strube and combines a 76-key split layout with an analog joystick on each half.
Unlike a conventional split keyboard that separates the keys loku two boards, Tiwaz gives each half additional controls for games or other PC tasks. The two halves can operate independently, meaning one side can be used as a compact gaming keypad while the other hand remains on a mouse.

The keyboard uses a 76-key ortholinear layout, with 38 keys on each half. It also includes six additional buttons that can be assigned to functions such as media controls. MX-compatible hot-swap sockets allow users to change switches without soldering, while per-key RGB lighting provides additional customization.
The integrated joysticks are the main feature of the project. They can be configured for analog gamepad input, digital directional controls, or mouse movement. The joystick can also be clicked, adding another programmable input that can be assigned through the keyboard’s firmware.
Tiwaz is powered by an STM32F401 microcontroller and uses QMK firmware, with Vial support for configuration. This lets users customize key assignments, layers, joystick functions, RGB lighting, and other controls.


For gaming, the layout opens up several possibilities. A player could use one hand as a dedicated controller while keeping a mouse in the other, or use the joystick for movement while assigning nearby keys to abilities, weapons, macros, or other game commands. The independent halves also make the design suitable for different desk setups and hand positions.
The project supports multiple joystick designs, including a tilting joystick and a PSP-style sliding joystick. The open hardware approach also allows enthusiasts to experiment with the joystick implementation and firmware.

The Tiwaz project is aimed primarily at mechanical keyboard enthusiasts who are comfortable building and configuring custom hardware. Its ortholinear layout may also require some adjustment for users accustomed to traditional keyboards.
According to the project’s documentation, Tiwaz is being developed as an open-source design, with a future Crowd Supply release planned. If it reaches production, it could offer PC gamers another option for combining keyboard, controller, and macro-pad functions in a single device.
