Koei Tecmo Announces Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake for March 2026 Release

Koei Tecmo has confirmed that Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake will launch on March 12, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement was made during the State of Play Japan event, where the company also premiered a new trailer for the game. This release continues Koei Tecmo’s efforts to bring the Fatal Frame series to modern platforms, following the remaster of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse.

The trailer highlighted the game’s dark and eerie atmosphere, focusing on the story’s main characters and the village setting. While the live stream offered a glimpse of the gameplay and environments, detailed information about the improvements or new features in the remake was limited. Fans of the series will likely recognize familiar locations and moments, but the updated visuals and audio are designed to provide a fresh experience.

A post on the PlayStation Blog provided additional insight into the game’s narrative and characters. Although it did not specify all gameplay changes, series director Makoto Shibata noted that the remake has received comprehensive upgrades. According to Shibata, “Every element has been enhanced — from graphics and sound to controls. The texture of each character’s skin and clothing has been meticulously refined, while the setting of Minakami Village has been beautifully reimagined with striking contrasts of light and shadow to create an atmosphere that is both haunting and lifelike.” This suggests that the remake will emphasize visual fidelity and immersive audio design while maintaining the core mechanics that the series is known for.

The remake is expected to maintain the survival horror elements and camera-based combat that the series has become known for, with players exploring the village and encountering supernatural events. The updated version aims to appeal both to longtime fans and to players discovering the series for the first time.

Pre-orders for Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake are now open on all supported platforms, allowing fans to secure a copy ahead of the official release. With the game’s launch planned for March 12, 2026, the announcement marks a major highlight for Koei Tecmo’s lineup and adds to the growing trend of remakes bringing classic horror titles to new audiences.
